OAV, or OVA stands for Originaly Animated for Video, or Original Video Animation.

Usually, an OAV episode is done with a higher budget than a TV episode. Which leads to better animation quality. An OAV doesn't have as many restrictions about content as a TV series, or movie would. An OAV series are usually 2-13 episodes long, while a TV series is usually 13-26 episodes long.

OAVs are released straight to home video, instead of being broadcast on TV, or in a movie theater.

Original Animation Video & Original Video Animation (OAV / OVA) are interchangeable terms used in Japan to refer to animation that is released directly to the video market without first going through a theatrical release or television broadcast.

Furthermore, OAVs are supposed to have original scripts, although there are exceptions. They can be based on a Manga or TV series, but the particular episode should be original. For example the Ranma ½ TV series follows Rumiko Takahashi's Manga fairly closely, however the Ranma ½ OAV series contains stories that were not in the original Manga series.

OAVs are generally higher quality than TV series because a larger budget is allocated to the production and more time is allowed for the work.

With very few exceptions, the vast majority of all pornographic Anime is released as OAVs since the material is not suitable for theatrical or television presentations.

That information came from here:

I just want to get straight what you mean by "hidden."
Are you refering to lost episodes?

If so, that isn't the case. OAV episodes are more often than not original episodes that weren't in a TV series or in the Manga the episodes were based off of.

Lost episodes are "special releases" of episodes they didn't want to show originally, or couldn't show before now.

I understand what you are saying Kyle, I have a whole room of OVA's in my room from fushugi yugi to other's.

My collection contains Box sets but without the lost or hidden eps most stores call them OVA's i do not no why but on the boxe's they say OVA and they reffer to Lost episodes that were never aired on television. It says so on the box im reading. :)

I have complete collections of anime all with there current OVA'S Most of my boxes say these episodes were never intended to be aired on national television, however some peeps do so anyways lol. I did not no about the budget of a studios production value however thanx!
