I don't know if I have mentioned this before (or if anybody has), but the mark on each of the Homunculi (Homunculus singular, Homunculi plural) is called Ouroboros. It is the image of a serpent devouring its own tail.
In the center of this "Ouroboros Tattoo" is a symbol I'm sure you've seen before. In religious context, it is referred to the Star of David, and is the main symbol of Judaism.
In early Alchemy (and some classes of magical learning), it was known as the "Seal of Solomon," and was a combination of the symbols of both Fire (A triangle pointing up) and Water (a triangle pointing down). In doing this, it also creates the symbols for Earth (triangle pointing down with a horizontal line through it) and Air (triangle pointing up with a horizontal line through it).
And now you've learned a little more about both Alchemic and Magical symbolism. Woo!
EDIT: For those who are actually interested, I hope you pay close attention to Wednesday Night's episode (Episode 22 - Created Humans, I think it's called). It has to do with the Philosopher's Stone. But it's a spoiler, so...
Yeah... pay close attention to the design on the floor and walls of the room with all the red water, in which the Homunculi want Ed to make the Philosopher's Stone. Does any of it look familiar? It should, you've seen it multiple times already. And you haven't seen the last of it, either.
