Got a question? 質問があるの?

It's not nearly as complex as English, but as usual we find ways to screw it up.

Got a question? 質問があるの?

Post by geishaboy »

If you have a question about anything to with Japanese, post here and I will do my best to answer it. If it needs a huge long mega big explaination I might have to start a new thread, but I will do my best.

Hopefully others here on AA who have a bit of Japanese knowledge, and I know there are a couple floating around, will be able to help answering your questions also.

So go on, dont be shy, ask me anything. Well, within reason that is...

Everyone wants to know that! I actually answered this question in another thread, but here it is again thanks to the wonders of Ctrl-V.

First of, there is "suki desu" 好きです. Wich literally means "is like". It means I like you, but depending the circumstance, it can mean "I love you". The plain form of this is "suki da" 好きだ.This can also be used with objects, the other two cannot.

On from that, there is "koi wo shimasu" 恋をします. This means "to fall in love". So saying that is like saying "I'm falling in love". The plain form is "koi wo suru" 恋をする. The grammar for this one is a little more complicated, so I wont go into it too much just yet.

The last most common way is "ai shiteru" 愛してる. The grammar on this one also takes a while to explain, so I wont go into it just yet. But I will warn you that this is a really really strong way of saying it. If a guy says it to you he probably does not want a date, he wants to marry you and be the father of your children. It's strong in a way that does not have an english translation.

I can only guess that Arain is someones name, its not a Japanese word.

Well then, you would say Arian ga suki desu アランが好きです This means "I like Arian". If you were to say it to a persons face, "suki desu" would be fine. The plain form is "sukida" 好きだ.

As for falling in love, thats a bit different. "koi wo shimasu" is to fall in love. You could say "Arain to koi wo shimasu" アランと恋をします. This would be saying that you are falling in love with each other because the "to" と particle is used.

To say simply,"I am falling in love with Arain" that would be "(bokuwa)Arain ni koi wo shimasu"(ぼくは)アランに恋をします. Because the particle ni に is used here it is showing that you are falling in love with her. A literal translation would be "I am falling in love to Arian", even though that does not make much sense in englsh.

The last one "aishiteru" 愛してる is kind of a set phrase, so I doesnt need to be altered.

I have a feeling I should make a thread about how to pick up Japanese girls :-k

"Sesshomaru-sama, suki desu!"

Yeah, it's perfect. It says "Sesshomaru - sama, I love you!"

The Japanese translation is せっしょまるさま、好きです!

I'll field this one.

In short "Im mad at you" is "Kimi ni okotte iru" キミに怒っている. This is a set expression, so you can have "~anything/anyone~ ni okotte iru". The word for friend is "tomodachi" so to say "I am angry with my friend" Would be "(watashi no) tomodachi ni okotte iru" Easy mans.
And, how do you say 'yes' and 'no' in Japanese?
This is really tricky, but for now I will give you the simplified explaination.

In short, yes is "Hai" はい and no is "iie" いいえ. Because even we say "Yeah" and "nah" instead of "yes" and "no" half the time, The casual forms in Japanese are "iya" いや for no (nah) and "ee" ええ for yes (yeah).

Remember when you say yes and no in Japanese you are showing that you either agree or disagree with what a person has said, it's slightly different than enlish.

The word for help in Japanese is stronger than in engish, it also means to save and rescue. But if you were struggling with something, be best thing to to would be to say some thing like "Excuse, but..." or "do you have a minute". Saying this to a Japanese person is about the same as saying "can you give me a hand" in englsh. So,

excuse me, but.. - Anou sumimasen ga.. あのう、すみませんが。。。

Do you have a minute - anou, chotto ii? あのう、ちょっといい?

As for "how do you say [something] in Japanese" that is quite easy. Basically "nihongo de [something] wa nanto iimasuka?" 日本語で [something] は何と言いますか.
The word "iimasu" means "to speak" the plain form is "iu" (pronounced "yuu" for some reason).
