This is a too general question. In terms of power, The Ideon wins, since it is noted by most to be the most powerful weapon in anime history. In the 2nd Ideon movie, Be Ivoked, The Ideon self-destructs, sending waves of power rippling and destroying the entire universe.

In terms of greatest in legacy, I would say Mazinger Z. Why? Because without Mazinger Z, The Super Robot genre would not have existed.

However, my personal favorite mechs (In terms of design only, not considering the anime they are in) are a three way tie between the New Getter Robo, Mazinkaiser, and the Daiku Maryu. These I think are the best designed mechs.

3. Gundam Wing

Zengar you make very presuasive points there. I've heard of Ideons legendary power.

In terms of legacy there is no question Mazinger Z started the giant robot genre.

But I'd have to go with the original Mobile Suit Gundam which took the giant robot genre and re-wrote it as a whole new separate genre of giant robots at war or the realistic robot.

The original Gundam started the whole Gundam saga and it's alternates like Seed, Wing and X, which is something most Seed and Wing fans seem to be incapable of realizing. Their favorite series owes it all to the original. Plus the loads of other realistic robot series, Macross, Votoms, Dougram, Orguss.

Truely, Mazinger Z and Mobile Suit Gundam belong at the top of that list.

I have sinned for forgetting to mention First Gundam. Of all the animes to forget, I can not believe I forgot 0079. ><

Gundam 0079 should be mentioned for all the reasons Duuz mentioned as well, for without First Gundam, we would not have had the real type mecha genre, which I truely keep in high regards (about on equal footing with my love for the super type mecha genre).

I am curious, which version of Voltron do you speak of? Golion or DaiRugger XV? And which Zoids do you speak of? While I enjoyed Chaotic Century and Guardian Force, Zoids New Century Zero and Fuzors were so very terrible that they even got cancelled in Japan. Only God knows how much I abhor the Liger Zero. However, I am looking forward to the new Zoids anime, Zoids Genesis, since it seems as if it will follow in the CC/GF tradition.

Golion, The remake in 3d was quite Lame... Dairugger was ok I supose but I own the entire series (classic series). Zoids chaotic was my fac as well. I have models of liger zero and a few others, even berserker furry. :)

I was always more of a Dairugger person, especially since I used to love playing with my older cousin's 1980s DaiRugger toys. Although I must admit that I disliked the DaiRugger's unsymmetrical design though, it irks me when one can pick out the individual components by sight.

However, Golion I liked, but I found less to my interest, simply because as a child, I hated the idea of mechanical animals. I have a penchant for mechanical objects, Jets, tanks, cars, etc, and this is probably why I disliked Saber Rider as a child, and probably would have hated Tobikage, if it were not for the Tobikage itself's bipedal design, as well as its amazing battle scenes an intriguing plot.

Course now I really want to rewatch everything from the golden days (and this includes the live action stuff as well, I really wish I could find First Ultraman, Kamen Rider Black RX and Bioman subtitled.), Golion, Tobikage, Saber Rider, Daimos, Great Mazinger, Gatchaman, Blue Noah, the list goes on...

As for Zoids, I still was not too keen on the idea of mecha animals, but Zoids Guardian Force and Chaotic Century managed to pull this off fairly well. As for the models, I previously was only interested in the Blade Liger, but some of the Genesis kits are quite neat, I had a chance to handle several assembled Genesis kits, and I'm really liking the Bioraptor.
