Born through mutations, E's possess abilities that far exceed normal human beings.

15 year old Kai Kudo -who has powers different from the rest of the E's- together with his sickly sister Hikaru was protected from a world that fears E's by an organization called ASHURUM. ASHURUM is one of the 12 corporations that now rules the world. Scouted by Eiji, Kai was delegated to the ASHURUM special force AESES and undergo intensive training, such as sharpshooting, martial arts, and hacking, not to mention psychic training.

Whenever he was free, Kai visited Hikaru at the hospital belongs to the organization, but Hikaru's condition never improved. After one year of training, Shen-lon-another psychic in AESES who felt threatned by Kai from the first time he saw him- told Kai Eiji really only wanted his sister Hikaru, because she was said to have had amazing psychic powers, but was too sick to use them. Shen-lon told Kai that Eiji was just hoping Kai would have those amazing genes too, and was using him.

Not believing, Kai went on a big mission with the other E's to Gald city to infiltrate a hideout of guerillas that was said to have been using psychics against their will. While on the mission however, Kai encountered civilians that were said to have been evacuated. While trying to save them from the melee, one-afraid of the E's-shot and killed his partner. Kai, distraught, felt a strong telepathic surge attack another of his friend's minds. Still shocked from all that had happened, Kai tried to help the girl, but met up with his rival, Shen-lon, who had a hate for the humans who he believed had hurt his sister. In a rage, Shen-lon unleashed a psychic blast that decimated half the city. Later washing up on shore, Kai was found by a girl named Asuka. After nursing him to health, Kai later found out from her friend, Yuki- a "handyman" that did odd jobs, or whatever was required for money-that he would not be able to get his psychic levels back to what they were unless he went back to ASHURUM. After seeing more of the city and spending time around the people he fought to protect, Kai decides to stay with Asuka and Yuki a little longer...

One thing that's easy to notice from the first volume of E's Otherwise is that it comes off as being very much like S-Cry-Ed. Now this could be a good thing for people who liked S-Cry-Ed, because you're going to be seeing a show that seems quite similar, but this could also hurt it by people clumping it in as a rip-off. Now don't think that you're going to get the exact same show though; there certainly are plenty of differences in the two.

At the beginning we see our lead character Kai being revived in this laboratory for some reason. From there the show does a good job of setting up the world of E's Otherwise for the viewer.

It's the near future and the world is run by twelve powerful corporations instead of governments, because we're told that the governments were not capable of running society anymore. Ashurum, one of these corporations, is a military contractor, and they own the laboratory where Kai awakens. We find out that he is one of a growing group of people that have psychic powers. Kai can convert thought to energy, and he seems to be adept at this ability, so he is used by Ashurum to fight others with psychic powers that the military cannot handle and to deal with situations that are too dangerous for ordinary people. These people with special powers are called E's or AESES. Outside of Ashurum, they are persecuted for being different and a threat to people, so many of these AESES harbor a grudge against society.

The first volume is a good start to the series. We are introduced to the other psychics that Kai works with, and we get a look at his training for Ashurum. We also find out Kai's reason for working at Ashurum. His sister is very ill and Ashurum has taken care of her ever since their mother died. This is Kai's way of repaying what he thinks is his debt for the generosity that this corporation is showing. However things aren't as easy as they seem here. It turns out that Ashurum might be keeping Kei's sister around because of her potential psychic abilities. It also seems as if Ashurum might not be on the up and up, and that they might be holding and training the AESES for their own interests. Some of the other corporations do seem to be suspicious of the fact the Ashurum is collecting all of the AESES for themselves. This could potentially lead to danger.

Things quickly change as one of the AESES' missions runs into problems, and Kai's soft side conflicts with his job at Ashurum. Here is where we get to meet Yuuki. He is for the most part a freelancer for shady underground organizations, but through him we're introduced to the overlying plot of E's Otherwise. He is asked to recover The Sacrament, but the name is all that we know. It's easy to tell that this will be important later on in the series. After the problematic mission, Yuuki finds Kai, and from the way it looks these two will quickly become a team to be reckoned with.

In the near future, twelve powerful multi-conglomerates control the entire world. Mysteriously, a small segment of the human population have developed psychic abilities. Not just spoon-bending or other parlor tricks, but full-fledged, "controlling things with just the power of your mind" abilities. A handful of these psychics (also called mutants, or E's) are brought together under the umbrella of Ashurum's special forces unit, known as AESES. Here, under the watchful eye of team leader Eiji Sagimiya, teens are taught to control their powers in ways which would benefit others. Most notably, AESES goes after rogue psychics who use their abilities to the detriment of society.

It's a story reminiscent of X-Men: young people with special powers above and beyond those of ordinary human beings are hidden away for their own protection and then trained to use their abilities "for good." But are the goals of Ashurum really for the benefit of humanity?

The anime series E's Otherwise focuses on one of the young psychics brought in by Ashurum for training: Kai Kudou. Kai goes into AESES because Ashurum provides medical care for his chronically ill younger sister, Hikaru. As long as they treat her, Kai believes he's in Ashurum's debt. As Kai attempts to fit in with the highly-trained AESES group, he is constantly harassed by one of the more hot-tempered members of the team, Shen-Long Belvedere. Shen-Long (and his twin sister, Shen-Lu) are from the "outside," where Ashurum has little influence and people treat E's with bigoted scorn. Somewhat understandably, the twins have no love for humanity. Since Kai grew up completely protected behind Ashurum's walls, he was sheltered from persecution and cannot, at first, understand Shen-Long's intense hatred for humans. Over the course of the series, however, Kai will learn about the real world, and will have to decide what his role in that world should be.

E's Otherwise, based on the manga of the same name, seems your standard issue action anime. While the characters are mildly interesting, only a few of the AESES team members seem to really leap out at you. Perhaps it's no big surprise that one of the more intriguing characters isn't Kai or even the bombastic Shen-Long. It's mysterious team leader Eiji Sagimiya who catches the most attention with his strange fascination with Kai's younger sister. Why does he go out of his way (even apparently forgoing work) to spend time with her? The mystery deepens when Shen-Long claims that it's really Hikaru's psychic abilities that Ashurum is interested in, inferring that her powers far outweigh her brother's. This may be because it's only the first disc, but other than Eiji, Kai, and the twins, none of the other AESES team members have really fleshed out personalities. The rest of the E's all meld together as a bland, generic, background cast.

While the overall premise of the show is intriguing, it's by no means original. Along with the aforementioned X-Men, viewers of E's Otherwise may find similarities in elements of Witch Hunter Robin and S-CRY-ed. It's too early to guess where the anime is headed, though Kai is sure to get a rude awakening or two along the course of the series. In respect to the action and portrayal of the various E's abilities, the show doesn't disappoint, but without stronger characters, E's Otherwise seems destined to be yet another action anime with a main character who starts to question his role as a "hero."
