What does "miko" mean on Japanese???

It's not nearly as complex as English, but as usual we find ways to screw it up.

You read the question. I heard that word but I don't know what is the meaning of it.

Miko(みこ) means Sorceress to the effect of something like a "Shrine maiden" or "Altar girl".

There are two kanji for Miko.

The first is 巫子. 巫 this part means Divine, or Medium(on it's own it is read "kannagi") and the second part 子 means "Child" ( the reading for this on its own is "ko")

The second is 巫女. The first part is the same but the second part in this kanji is 女, wich means "woman" ( the reading for this on its own is is "kanojo" wich can also mean "her" and "girlfriend").

I'm not sure of the root of this word, but I'm guessing that Miko is normally reffering to a younger woman who is some kind of magical being or has divine powers. I also have a feeling that it can also mean that is refers to a young woman that has some kind or divine or religious duities to preform. But in the latter case its is not pointitng to a specific religion.

I hope that answers your question.
