Well, Akira Toriyama did originally intend to end DBZ at the Frieza Saga but was urged to continue. The reason why he made the fight with Frieza so long was in the hope that people would lose interest, therefore he could stop where he would have liked to.

No such luck though I guess.

The reason that the battle w/ Freiza Took so long is that Freiza kept changing forms. but when Goku went Super Saiyan... 'Twas all Over

Actually, I recall reading that DBZ was originally supposed to finish at the end of the Cell saga.

That and the fact that they are basically aimed at the people that just buy anything that has the Dragonball name to it. IMO if it isn't done by Toriyama it doesn't count...(that includes SS4)
