What's so bad about dubs anyways?

Of course, I've been hearing a lot of fans say that they despise dubbed anime and that they prefer the subs. I wonder why, though?

I, for one, am not bothered by them. I think that the voice acting is actually very well done and the dialogue seems well executed.

think 4kids watch a 4kids dub then watch a fansub(which when done well portray more than most proffesional subs espically since they add notes which explain certain text)some are pretty good at what they do the dubbers of gundam inuyasha and Naruto arne't horrible(that doesn't include "believe it" from the naruto dub as it does seriously suck but the lines are kept about the same)

I like duds but if suvs is all that there is then i i don't mind watching subs well untill i learn japenese then subs won't be problem

oh yeah some people even use subs as a way to learn some japanese myself included ^^

i like the dubbed because with the subbed i hafta read the words and cant concentrate on the picture or whats happening as much

Maybe 10 years ago dubs were bad, because anime wasn't as cultivated as it is today. Because anime has gotten more popular, most companies now get talented voice actors.

People argue that the voice actors never sound 'right.' That's because in ALL anime cases, the japanese version (obviously) always comes first. That means that the Japanese voice actors always set what the character sounds like. Of course it's never going to sound right, because Dubs always get second dibs for voice actors. I bet that if they dubbed Bugs Bunny in Japanese, it wouldnt sound right either because the American voice actor set the trend.

I prefer dubs. If I wanted to read anime, I'd pick up some manga. There are a few series I do like the subbed better, because it is more emotional. People just like to act all 'Otaku' because 'True Otakus' bash dubs. It's trendy to hate dubs,

I've learned how to read the subs and watch but I don't hate dubs..expect 4kids they kill anime they really do I mean they change the NAMES how sad is that? How many people actually care what the name is supposed to mean?

I'm actually quite suprised. On any other board, flaming would have pursued 5 minutes after I posted. It's actually quite shocking how many people actually don't mind dubs here. Glad to see people aren't generally biased towards one type or the other.

Different places mean different people, so then there would be different reactions in the usual situations.

I would think if you were a true fan of something, you would respect other people for their likes, consider the obvious circumstances, and get to a level of understanding instead of fighting. I don't see what's the point of getting upset over something so small like voicings when you could be enjoying yourself with the overall anime. It just ruins the fun that way for you and everyone else.

Getting back to the topic, like Slash-san said, when anime first started out, the dubbing wasn't all that great. They would smash a lot of information and not really bother to fit the mouths when the characters talked and expression the VAs would portray was uneasy and gave mixed messages with the tone and everything else to the audience (I think the dubbed Speed Racer was like that if I can remember those many years back). As the years went on and anime became in an upswing in popularity, it went through the process of smoothing out and maturing, so to speak.

For me, I don't really mind dubs much at all. Dubbed anime has been my first, and so I appreciated that. It was either dubbed or none at all anyway. Only recently for the past 3 years have I started watching subs, and if I have the chance, I'll go to that instead.

My reasons for watching subs is for the original formatting, unedited, and that I could watch it anytime rather than wait for the late hours of the night on TV where there's commercials bombarding my eyes, and not to increase my speed in reading. Or putting my Japanese language to use in translating faster...I barely do any of that (even though that would help my bad memory...).

I prefer dubed for many reasons mainly because of the distraction reading subs causes. The only exeption I have come accross so far is the Toonami dubing of the dragonball Z films for the UK where they get all the names wrong (Call Piccalo Big green which really irritates me) and it just spoils the film. I think I heard that the american dubs don't have this problem so I wonder why the did not just use them as it is pretty much the same language !!

Not to mention that 'old' dinosaurs like me used to watch all the anime, back when it wasnt popular, in it's horrible dubbed format. It's actually nostalgic to me to watch some of the older stuff, especially when they used to show anime on Sci-Fi. That crap was the best.

One of the major reasons for me watching subbed is you get to watch the anime years and years before it hits US soil. In some cases, anime never gets licensed. I watched Prince of Tennis subbed because I actually never thought it'd pick up here (Of course, now it's going to be on Toonamis new run). I watch series subbed if I get too eager to see something.

Sometimes, dubs can be very witty.

Well, this is always the case with Samurai Pizza Cats. The original Japanese version takes itself way too seriously and is filled with esoteric Japanese culture references.

The English dub is filled with pop culture references and self-parodying.

Here's the deal: they didn't actually translate it. The dubbers were provided with the footage, but not the original scripts, which got lost. So therefore, they rewrote them entirely. And that's how the humor in SPC came to be.
