The pictures aren't showing up, but the custom you're describing reminds me of the old Victorian times of keeping locks of hair in lockets.

I would imagine it has the same principle behind it; maybe for luck a Japanese soldier would keep a lock of hair of someone he loves dearly on him at all times.

It's new one to me, mind you, I havent studied too much into Jpaanese history
