Okay, here's the deal. She's definitely not retarded (to count as "mentally retarded", you actually have to have a low IQ - This is NOT the case with Ed). I'm not certain if she is autistic or not, but that would explain what I know for a fact. She's eccentric.

If you look back, many geniuses are eccentric. (Wasn't it Beethoven who was a real jerk?) The very aspect of being a genius commonly walks the fence of Insanity is not a new one. Especially in fiction (heck, I'm watching Back to the Future right now - you think it's easy to tell that the Doc is sane? True, he's not as nuts as Ed, but he still borderlines on insanity).
