Name translation

It's not nearly as complex as English, but as usual we find ways to screw it up.

Raquel: "rakeru" ラケル

Valkery: ヴァークーリ or バークーリ: they're both pronounced "baakuuri", but the first translation uses the ヴァ "va" kana, while the second one uses バ "ba". So Japanese people who read the first one just might pronounce the V sound. Perhaps. ^_^ If they're familiar with English.

The only thing close to a kanji for those names is for Valkery, and thats only if you choose to pronounce it "baakuuri"

婆空理 meaning "Old womans abstract reasoning"

"Raquel" is a foreign name. Even though it sounds the same as a Japanese word, it doesn't really make it the same, so, no, "Raquel" is just "rakeru" with no meaning, basically.

You can pick kanji for your name syllable by syllable if you want to put a lot of time into it and hunt down special meanings. Then you could use the katakana above the kanji (making it furigana) to show the pronounciation.

But that's just for fun, it really wouldn't make much sense to native Japanese people.

Yeah, the only hard part about making kanji names like that is that because they are compounded, you normally have to use the on readings

And then after that you need to make sure it loosely makes sense, it's pretty pointless putting kanji together that would literally mean "pot lid apple monkey" or something

Can't do the kana here at work, but:

-Mickel - Mikeru
-Alexandra - Arekusandora
-Isabel - Isaberu
-João (john) ...I don't know how to pronoune this. Is it Portuguese? Can you give me the pronounciation?
-Paulo (paul) - Pauro/Paaro ? Not really sure of the original pronounciation.
-Zélia - Zeria
-Francisco - Furanshisuko
-Teresa - Tarisa
-Vanessa - Banesa
-Cátia - Kachia/Katea ...not sure how to pronounce this either.
-Tânia - Tania
-Margarida - Marugarida
-Cláudia - Kuraadia/Kuraudia
-Liliana - Ririana
-Carlos - Kaarosu
-Catarina - Katarina
-Ana - Ana
-Angelo - Anjero ...or would it be Anhero?
-Sara - Sera

What country are you from? Some of those look familiar from Spanish class, but with the ã, I'm thinking it's not Spanish. ^^;

As for translating those names...
Did you just pick these, or are they from somewhere? If they're from an anime or the name of a voice actor, pop star, etc, it'll be easier to look up the kanji for that particular name.

Because otherwise... most of those names have 100+ readings. Some have 20-50. It'd be too time consuming for me to do them all for you.

I can tell you some common words that coincide with the names:

Sakura - cherry blossom
Megumi - blessing
Arashi - storm
Izumi - (water) spring
Hibiki - echo

Hope that helps a bit!

yep, it helps a lot!! some of them are from some JPN friends of mine , but others are from animes. like Hibiki-vandread, shinozuka-gadguard, kyohei-burst angel, koji & kouichi-digimon 4.

by the way, i'm from portugal, thats next to spain, i do speak a little spanish, but those names are portuguese.
they r prononced like this:
-joão -jo-an-ou
-paulo -pah-ou-lou
-catia -cáh-ti-ah
-angelo -ân-éh-lou

does this help?
hey, Dreams, if you're interested in portuguese i can help.

Thanks!!!!!

Is Portuguese similar to Spanish? I might be able to pick up on some of it then.

João: Joanoo
Paulo: Paooro
Catia: Katia
Angelo: Anhero

...Haha, I hope. Sounds close enough.
I'll look up the anime names when I have some more time.
