I read somewhere that it was Zach's spirit watching over Cloud still. Karin, do u remember any appearances during scenes of a wolf/dog? There are quite a few scenes in which it does appear: at Zach's grave in the beginning, after Cloud finds Tifa after she fights with 'what's his name- Loz, and then in the forest, and Zach actually appears in the end when Cloud died but Aerith and Zach said it wasn't his time yet.
