The difference between the i and na adjectives

When using either one in a sentence, I'm sort of confused of which one to use.

Are you supposed to just know the set of adjectives go to which, or is there some type of way to know which adjective to use?

You can use either one in a sentance depending on what you want to say ie:

kawaii かわいい - i adjective, meaning "cute"
kirei　きれい - na adjective meaning "pretty"
geisha 芸者- Traditonal Japanese entertaining girls

芸者はかわいいです
geisha ha kawaii desu
geishas are cute

芸者はきれいです
geisha ha kirei desu
geishas are pretty

--OR--

かわいい芸者
kawaii geisha
Cute geisha

きれいな芸者
kirei na geisha
Pretty geisha

--NEGATIVE FORM--

芸者はかわくないです
geisha ha kawaiku nai desu
Geishas are not cute

芸者はきれいじゃないです
geisha ha kirei janai desu
Geishas are not pretty

--PAST TENSE--

芸者はかわいかった
geisha wa kawai katta
Geishas were cute

芸者はきれいだった
geisha ha kirei datta
Geishas were pretty

--ADVERB FORM--

芸者はかわいく成る
geisha ha kawai　ku naru
The geisha becomes cute

芸者はきれいに成る
geisha ha kirei ni naru
The geisha becomes pretty

it's pretty much the same as english. you use whatever adj you want. it's the endings that separate the i & na. that's it.
