Anime = animation

Although for us here in America, people associate "anime" as only from Japan. Anything else is just...cartoon. But seriously, they have the same meaning. Just different region and style.

But...despite how I know this, calling American cartoons "anime" just sounds...wrong to me.

I totally agree. In Japan I'm sure they say the same thing but in vise-versa. I'm sure some of OUR cartoons are known among children in Japan as "Anime", even though there not as well.
