I’m interested in buying the following Macross Anime DVD & CD soundtracks, preferably in brand new / sealed condition.

The first one is a bootleg, with poor video and worse subtitling. This I know as FX is a bootlegging company. If the MAcross Zero set has subtitles, then it is also a bootleg. I actually have the dishonor of owning the Macross Zero bootleg set, and I can tell you that it was not worth the two dollars I spent on it. And as for the imported cds, if they cost less than $30, they are most likely bootlegs as well. I know that http://www.rightstuf.com stocks the domestic Macross II soundtrack. http://www.amazon.com does have the cds, but it will be hard to distinguish if the discs are authentic or not, even with the high prices. If you do intend to buy from them, anything less than $30 is a bootleg (though I can't say if those that have higher prices aren't). To be safer, I would order from http://www.amazon.co.jp or some other Japanese retail outlet for authentic cds.

Apparently there are at least 4 different Bootleg versions out there:

Now I’m very confused!

As for Macross DYRL "Perfect Edition", I was told at Macross World forums that there are two versions, the "Perfect Edition by FX" which is supposed to have excellent video/audio quality & perfectly translated English subtitles and the standard Edition not marked by "FX", which is supposed to be of poorer video/audio quality and subs titles.

So which one do you have?
I download the fan-sub version of Macross DYRL & Zero from torrent and they have excellent Video/Audio & sub quality, but the sub fonts are rather small and not viewable when projected on my 21” TV via TV-Out.

I was after the Perfect Edition by FX until now, but now that you mention this, I really don’t know which one I should get?

I was also looking for RahXephon CD soundtrack 1 & 2.
Are these two Japanese import CDs or domestic US made CDs?
The reason I ask is because here, they’re labelled as US CDs:

Really, how could you distinguish if a soundtrack CD is bootleg, I only know of some basic rules / tips of spotting a bootleg DVD, but I was not aware of bootleg CDs!

Macross II CD, Ninja Scroll CD & RahXephon CD 1-2 are all sold under 30$ at http://www.rightstuf.com for 15$ so they could also pass for bootlegs based on the “low price” criteria.

This entire bootleg thing is getting rather tiresome!

I was not aware that there were two different bootlegs of Macross DYRL, so I withdraw my earlier statement.

The bootleg criteria only applies to imported cds, which are not domesticated. Cds that are domesticated and brought over to the US are generally 15 or so dollars. Rightstuf.com sells these domesticated cds. Don't worry about finding bootlegs on Rightstuf, as they are both an anime licenser, and a retail store. Rightstuf is a very high profile anime store, and an anime licenser would not promote bootlegs.

http://www.shopanimedvd.com/ sells bootleg anime under the guise of "imported" anime, so I would say that the cds that are under the label of "imported" are also bootlegs.
