Netflix Announced Kakegurui Twin spin-off Series For 2022 Release Posted Dec 28, 2021
The Kakegurui Twin spin-off manga is getting its own anime adaptation and will be coming to Netflix, as the streaming giant and studio MAPPA revealed. During the Netflix Japan Festival “Anime Day” in early November, Netflix announced the spin-off based on the popular anime Kakegurui is slated for a worldwide release in August 2022. The anime is an adaptation of the spin-off manga series written by Homura Kawamoto and is a prequel to Kakegurui by the same creator, set one year before the events of the main series. This time, we will find out more about the popular character Mary Saotome and her start at the infamous Hyakkaou Private Academy, long before Yumeko Jabami enrolled in it.
Kakegurui Twin – the prequel to the famous Kakegurui
Homura Kawamoto created the main Kakegurui series in 2014 with illustrator Tōru Naomura and started the spin-off Kakegurui Twin the following year with illustrator Kei Saiki. Both are ongoing, with 12 volumes of the main series and 10 volumes of the spin-off out to date. The new Kakegurui Twin anime series will be animated by studio MAPPA, the same studio behind the first two seasons of the main Kakegurui anime. The studio is also known for its work on popular anime such as Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and the upcoming anime adaptation of the hit manga series Chainsaw Man.
This time, we will be taken to the past, namely one year before the happenings in Kakegurui, when Mary Saotome has her first day at the elite Hyakkaou Private Academy and finds out about the twisted rules of the school and the extraordinary curriculum. As Kakegurui fans will already know, this is not an ordinary academy. Instead of studying math, history, and the likes, students compete in high-risk games of chance and learn to read and defeat their opponents to come out at the top. A lot is at stake for the students, as the winners are rewarded with social status and prestige, while the losers are degraded to “house pets” and have to do whatever the winners ask of them. This time around, we get to learn more about Mary, how she settles into the academy, and where her hatred for the student council is rooted. Mary will again be voiced by voice actress Minami Tanaka and will be joined by the new character Tsuzura Hanatemari, her close friend.
How the Kakegurui series is taking off
Netflix has been putting a greater emphasis on anime on its streaming service. When they first started their increased effort in licensing and producing anime, the main series Kakegurui by Homura Kawamoto was among the first anime adaptations licensed exclusively to Netflix. The manga on which the series is based is ongoing and has been a great success, prompting the making of the spin-offs Kakegurui Twin and Kakegurui Midari, as well as the live-action TV adaptation Kakegurui with actress Minami Hamabe taking the role of the protagonist Yumeko Jabami. Two movies based on the original series have also been released in Japan.
Bringing together intriguing characters, a twisted plot, and the excitement of high-stakes games of chance, Kakegurui strikes a chord with the audiences. Gambling, which takes center stage in the show, is a popular pastime across the world, with the Japanese Pachinko game machines, slot machines, all kinds of table casino games as well as sports betting available worldwide. With the rise of the internet, casinos and sportsbooks have found their way onto the web, making gambling easily accessible and prompting experts to publish reviews and guides on online gambling portals to help users find the best platform to place their bets on. With these developments, gambling is becoming an increasingly common pastime both in Asia and the west, making Kakegurui especially exciting for many.
The spin-off series Kakegurui Twin by Homura Kawamoto is coming to Netflix and is slated for a worldwide release in August of next year. The incredible story of the Hyakkaou Private Academy and its devious students goes into the next round, this time with Mary Saotome taking center stage. While we wait for the spin-off anime to be released, there is plenty of Kakegurui action ready to keep us busy. The first two seasons of the main anime series are currently available on Netflix, as well as the live-action TV show, so anyone who hasn’t watched it yet can get into the story ahead of the new series debut.
