"Kakegurui," which loosely translates to "compulsive gambler," is a psychological gambling thriller set at Hyakkaou Private Academy, an elite institution unlike any other. Here the children of Japan's wealthiest and most powerful families are ranked not by their grades or their talent on the sports field, but by their skill at the gambling table. Money is power, and a student's place in the rigid social hierarchy rises or falls on the outcome of every wager.

Those who run up debts they cannot repay are branded "house pets" and reduced to the playthings of their classmates, stripped of dignity until they can buy their way back out. Presiding over this merciless system is the student council and its enigmatic president, Kirari Momobami, who treats the entire school as her personal game board.

Into this world arrives Yumeko Jabami, a beautiful and disarmingly polite transfer student who soon reveals herself to be a gambler of a very different kind. Yumeko does not play to win money or to climb the hierarchy; she plays for the pure, intoxicating thrill of risking everything, and she is delighted rather than frightened when she discovers that her opponents are cheating. Her fearlessness turns the academy's rigged games against the very people who built them, exposing their schemes and shaking the student council's grip on power.

As Yumeko draws in classmates like the timid Ryota Suzui, the proud Mary Saotome, and a gallery of increasingly unhinged council members, each match becomes an elaborate battle of nerve, deception, and read-your-opponent psychology. The series is famous for its lavish production and its wildly exaggerated, almost grotesque facial expressions, which capture both the ecstasy and the terror of betting it all on a single hand.

Based on the manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, the anime was produced by studio MAPPA and directed by Yuichiro Hayashi. The first season premiered in 2017, followed by a second season, "Kakegurui ××," in 2019, and a spinoff series, "Kakegurui Twin," centered on Mary Saotome. The franchise has also spawned a popular Japanese live-action drama and films.
