If you don't want to read the article, here's the gist of it. Colleges are churning out less doctors, but more people need health care. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are highly trained nurses and currently have some power- more than nurses, less than doctors. What they can do varies by state, but with more and more health care being needed, NPs are starting to open up their own practices and theres a push for NPs to have the same power as doctors. If this passes, it will make me very happy. As a nursing student and the daughter of a nurse, I can tell you all that nurses a do pretty much what what T.V. portrays doctors doing when they're in hospitals, sans the surgery. We all ready do so much after 2 years (an associate degree) and to become an NP is another 3 years of school (after your bachelors, which most nurses are getting sooner or later).

Dude, that would be awesome. Being an NP as the equivalence to a doctor without the liability. Wont it shoot down the professional layout though/ I can see protocol becoming messy, and people being less qualified for the stretch of leniency.
In my vision I would go for RN before NP. Heck, LPN before even RN. Our LPN's (LIKE Practicing Nursing, heheh) are the jerks of the system. Patients are just a shift change- its disgusting. I see more professionalism and dedication for a street EMT than a LPN at a nursing home. Its sickening.

I felt like a race horse in a world without racetracks or a champion college footballer suddenly confronted by Wall Street and a business suit, his days of glory shrunk to a little gold cup on his mantel with a date engraved on it like a tombstone.

I've never met a LPN. XD They might be the techs that I met when I was shadowing my two nurses, but I just assumed they were CNAs.
Just about every nursing organization is pushing for a BSN RN to be the entry level for any hospital work, so I'm thinking that within 10 years LPNs will be really rare.

LPN's can barely perform half the duties necessary. ive seen it too many times, in too many places. but like i said- their patient care is just a shift change to them.
i want to go in a tangent about this one elderly patient we had, but i wont blow up the topic. aha!
in ten years i can easily see the medical industry becoming completely different. even disregarding universal healthcare [if it ever happens], everything about medicinal practice, pharmacy, and hospital out there is changing. st. lukes is what mobil life is affiliated to (company), and we respond to that hospital or the sister one in cornwall. everyone talks about the legalities with paranoia, haha, never such enthusiasm. anyway, point is; you see and hear things.
some for the better, mind you. especially within engineering and protocol, staffing and essentially the entire bureaucracy.
