Kikyo sucks, if she werent there, i bet Inuyasha would use the shikon shards...what if the protecter of the jewel was some male, not kikyo, that would REALLY change the storyline

well, it probably isnt the fact that she wants the dtrenth. But maybe she would rather hold them then use them. As weve come to argreement on (irihash me and i think kagome all the way were in the convo)that when humans use jewel shards they tend to go a bit crazy.
