Outside of henti, a medical theme is seldom seen in anime. That alone makes the Black Jack intriguing. There isn’t a lot of back-story on the scarred, eccentric Doctor who calls himself Black Jack and says he only treats patients for excessive amounts of money (and isn’t above extortion). Not without compassion, he does help some individuals asking nothing in return. There is also a mystery/detective aspect to the show that aims it at a “thinking” audience.
Despite being an OVA done in ’93, Black Jack is surprisingly appealing and enjoyable with good animation. The characters look to be of normal weight (for a change) and feature a more mature design than the norm. Each episode is a well-told tale that stands on its own. There is an absence of extreme action but tight pacing leads to some dramatic moments of revelation. There are some very mature moments and the medical scenes are very graphic. This one is not for kiddies or the ultra sensitive.
I don’t see Black Jack having great mass appeal, but I liked it. It cancels out some of the blander things I’ve looked at lately. On my scale of one to ten, it's a 6.5 6 = Worth watching the entire series.

Black Jack - review
Stand back! This old Otaku has PMS, a broadsword, a double bladed battle ax, a flail, dagger in her teeth and a pistol in her belt.

Well then... I have only seen one episode of this and from your note, it would seem I am missing something. Love it note about "normal weight". '93 you say? That is an antique for anime. I'll check over on Netflix for this and hope they have the complete set.Dark Lilly wrote:..... There is also a mystery/detective aspect to the show that aims it at a “thinking” audience.........

I find I am attracted to the 'less than popular' ones also. But I do find a few so called main-stream ones entertaining.

Netflix is where I found it. And they do have the whole series.
Have you looked into Anime Takeout? Their turn around time is a bit slower than Netflix (they are out of LA)? Between the two, I have a pretty steady stream of anime.

Two of them?
2? Wow, you are OTAKU!!! Netflix comes out of Tacoma, so yes... it's quick. We are working on the Rurouni Kenshin, all 95 episodes at the moment. Don't know if we can handle another service at this time.Dark Lilly wrote:Netflix is where I found it. And they do have the whole series.

>Netflix comes out of Tacoma, so yes... it's quick.
++ Pretty handy, huh?
>We are working on the Rurouni Kenshin, all 95 episodes at the moment.
++Did that. Loved it, especially Samauri X. Was sad when I watched the last of the last episodes. I miss those people.

Ummmm, yeah. I do 8 out with Netflix and ten out with Anime Takeout. I work part time and take care of my mother the rest of the time. Anime helps prevent murder-suicide.

++Nary a flake down my way.
