when you put al and ed together it makes the word lead wich is a metal not what is in your pencil

yes, and Lead is also one of the metals centered around Alchemy:
Mercury - Mercury
Gold - Sun
Silver - Moon
Lead - ??? Venus???
I forget the rest... I used to know all of them... that's the big metal wheel in the begining credits, it has the astrological signs of all the metals bound into a transmutation circle. That's also the term "Fullmetal" meaning he accesses the realms of all of the metals as he uses his transmutation, in stead of just one, it's a well researched show to say the least.
