I could spoil it for you by telling you, but you'll get more out of it if you read the Jinchuu Arc Remembrances mini-arc (volumes 19 - 21) or watch Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen/Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal.

Not the movie Ishin Shishi no Requiem (Requiem for the Patriots), the OVA Tsuiokuhen. It tells all in a fairly accurate interpretation of Watsuki's story.

Hitokiri Battousai is on an "assignment" in January, 1864. He kills a Bakufu official. One of the bodyguards, a young man named Kiyosato Akira, puts up a fight and is able to wound Battousai on the left cheek. Just before he's put out of his misery by Battousai, he breathes out a name... "Tomoe".

The scar on his cheek closes up but doesn't seem to heal properly, staying prominent on his face even three months after the "assignment". (In the OVA version, the scar mysteriously bleeds whenever Kenshin kills someone).

Later on, Battousai's drinking in a bar when a beautiful young woman with jet black eyes wearing a purple shawl and smelling of haku baikou comes in and asks for chilled sake. These guys start hassling her until Battousai warns them off.

Battousai is walking down the street when he's attacked by a chain-sword wielding assassin. Battousai kills the guy with one of his own swords, spattering blood all over the place. He turns and looks and sees the girl from the pub standing there, covered in blood.

Battousai debates within himself whether or not to "silence" the girl. Before he can though, she passes out. Battousai takes her to the Kohagiya, a Choshuu hideout. The girl, whose name is Tomoe, is immediately hired on as a maid and generally makes herself a thorn in Battousai's side by staying in his room, inadvertently getting him teased by his comrade, Iizuka and continually questioning why he kills people.

Even though he resents her presence, Battousai begins to question his killing and his blade dulls just a bit. One night, Tomoe returns to their shared room from working and finds Battousai sleeping in the window. She tries to put her shawl around his shoulders, but he is instantly awake with his katana at her throat.

When he comes to his senses, he shoves Tomoe away and apologizes profusely. He then promises Tomoe that he will never kill her, no matter what may happen. After that, things between them are friendlier and Battousai begins to benefit from her presence, even relaxing enough to sleep in front of her.

One night, Iizuka comes into the room and asks Kenshin if he wants to go bar hopping with him, but Tomoe says that Kenshin has just fallen asleep, which Iizuka sees is indeed so. Iizuka leaves the room, not quite believing that Battousai would sleep in front of someone else. However, it doesn't make his job difficult, so he doesn't care.

Just then, one of Kenshin's overseers, Katagai, comes bursting in through the gate and tells Iizuka that the Isshin Shishi meeting at Ikadeya has been attacked by the Shinsengumi. Kenshin is instantly on his feet, wanting blood, but is held back by Iizuka.

The Shinsengumi battle the Isshin Shishi who set fire to Kyoto. In the chaos, the Isshin Shishi hideout, Kohagiya is burnt down. Kenshin and Tomoe are sent by the chief, Katsura Kogoro into hiding in the Otsu countryside, to pose as husband and wife.

Kenshin and Tomoe marry for real before going (in the manga version) and live in peace in the countryside for six months. Kenshin pretends to be an apothecary and makes medicine which heals sword wounds. He plays with the village children every day and for the first time in many years, just enjoys being alive. He tells Tomoe that he never understood what happiness truly was until he came to live with her in Otsu.


Back in Kyoto, Katagai (Katsura's second in command) sees Iizuka in the city and knows something's wrong because Iizuka's supposed to be at Kenshin and Tomoe's place. He follows Iizuka into the countryside and finds out that Iizuka is the Bakufu mole who leaked the location of the meeting and is now plotting with the ninja clan to destroy Kenshin. Before he can warn Kenshin though, tne ninjas kill him.

The leader of the ninja clan sends Tomoe's 11-year-old brother, Yukishiro Enishi to get in contact with her to set into motion the plan to destroy Himura Battousai.

However, this happiness is shortlived. One day, Enishi shows up out of the blue. Kenshin gives Tomoe and Enishi time together. Enishi tells Tomoe that it's time to cast tenchuu on Battousai for killing her fiance, one Kiyosato Akira.

Tomoe is shocked that Enishi has gotten himself involved in her plan to kill Battousai and orders him to return to Edo (Tokyo). Enishis very upset and doesn't understand why Neesan wants to protect Battousai, the man who stole her happiness. He leaves the farm house and returns to the HQ of the ninja clan he and Tomoe were both plotting to destroy Battousai with.

Tomoe tells Kenshin a bit about herself. She and Enishi are from a samurai family of Edo. She was supposed to marry, but before she could, her fiance joined the shogunate in the struggle for Kyoto and was killed (by Kenshin, but she doesn't tell him this). Tomoe says she came to Kyoto to avenge his death because she had to find someone to hate to keep her sanity. Kenshin tells her he understands and then confesses to her that he was slowly going insane with all the killing he had to do until he met her and she made him question himself.

Kenshin pledges to protect Tomoe's happiness and she finally smiles and agrees. In the morning Tomoe slips from the house and goes to the ninja clan to try and stop them from killing Kenshin. She tells them that his weakness is when he's asleep, but they see through her ploy and take her hostage.

Meanwhile, Enishi has been sent out by the leader of the ninja clan to deliver what he believes to be a letter of challenge to Kenshin (it's really a ransom note for Tomoe). When he sees Battousai heading into the forest, note in hand, Enishi goes into the house, expecting to see Tomoe. She's not there. What Enishi doesn't realize is that both he and his sister have been duped by the ninja clan into becoming bait for Battousai's destruction.

In the forest, Kenshin realizes that something is terribly wrong. The magnetic properties of the land, keep him from using his sixth sense to sense the presence of other warriors. He is attacked by members of the ninja clan who are able to injure him and reduce his senses by setting off explosions to blind and deafen him.

By the time Kenshin reaches where Tomoe is being held by the leader of the ninja clan, he's in pretty bad shape. He and the ninja leader fight, but odds are definitely against Kenshin. Kenshin decides to charge blindly at the ninja leader with a huge downslash.

Just as they are fighting, Tomoe wakes up in the ninja clan's HQ and sees the two men fighting. She hallucinates for a second and thinks she sees Kiyosato. She looks again and sees Kenshin standing there in bad shape. She realizes that he probably will be killed in the clash.

Kenshin charges forward, eyes shut and swings down. As he swings down, he suddenly smells the scent of Tomoe's haku baikou. It's too late... his sword cuts through Tomoe and the lead ninja as she places herself between them to protect Kenshin. Tomoe's dagger flies out of her hand and glances off Kenshin's left cheek, thus completing the cruciform scar. (In the OVA version, Tomoe cuts the scar into his cheek as she dies in his arms).

Enishi, standing behind a tree, sees this as well and thinks Kenshin murdered his sister for betraying him. Something inside him snaps.

Kenshin holds Tomoe close to him as she dies in his arms. Somehow, in his injured state, Kenshin is able to get himself and Tomoe's body back to the cabin. Two weeks pass as Kenshin recovers from his injuries. One day, he opens Tomoe's diary and reads an entry from a year ago.

It reads that Tomoe's fiance, Kiyosato Akira was killed in Kyoto. Kenshin remembers the names Kiyosato and Tomoe. He remembers the night a year earlier when he killed Kiyosato and finally realizes that he was the one who stole Tomoe's happiness.

Thus the unstoppable killer sees firsthand the consequences of his actions. Kenshin vows that after the war is over, he will never kill again. The rest as they say, is history.

Negative, she never asked for you to ruin if for her, especially all the good bits. I dislike it when a user tells the entire anime to someone who has not even watched that particular anime, As the user will be turned off because he/she already knows the entire plot.

it's ok.even i know the plot,i still haven't watched it yet,i guess maybe because of this i'm a bit excited of buying the movie and the whole series!!!
though it would be easier for you to just tell me the part when his cheek was scarred but still thanks for the (big) effort of typing the story.i do appreciate it.
