Maybe it's because there are some jewel shards still in Kagome's time so she can pass through... but also yeah the whole connection thing is kind of confusing isn't it??

the shards allow kagome to pass through the well, however demons can pass through the well without a shard. thats how mistriss centiped got kagome fomr her era to the feudal era

i heard a good explination to this issue in a fanfiction i read by Sueric entitled "Chronicles". abiding by Newton's laws of nature, or something like that, matter cannot coexist in the same time...meaning that since Kagome is FROM the future, she can exist in the past because there isn't another one of her running aroudn back then. futhermore, that means that InuYasha can go through the well becasue...and this is the kicker...he isn't alive in her time. so there aren't two of him then either.

as for the shards...i'm thinking that InuYasha has the ability to travel back and forth. it's not youkai that can do it. remember shippo tried to go back to Kagome when InuYasha sealed the well on her but couldn't. i'm thinking he has some connection to it and as long as they are with him, they can travel back and forth. think of the chaos if any demon could pass through and Naraku happened upon the well (maybe he'd get hit by a bus...how great would that be?) or better...flufy sama ended in Kagome's time (i'd pay money to see that).
