Character Description: Rick
In the manga, Rick lives in the slums outside of Ciudad del Este. Although he does not look like an Ishvalan at first glance, he has inherited blood from his ancestors and red eyes from his mother. In the 2009 anime however, Rick looks fully Ishvalan with red eyes and white hair. Along with an older Ishvalan, Rick discovered an unconscious Scar floating in the sewers after the man's fight with Lust and Gluttony. He responds positively when Scar asks (seemingly unresponsive and unable to move) if his right arm is intact and seems very impressed by the Dragon Pulse tattoo.
Rick is a cunning young man, as he reveals that he would have robbed Scar of what little he had and thrown the man back into the water had he not been an Ishvalan.
On the other hand, Rick cares greatly for Scar, as he tends to his wounds and feeds him until he regains his strength and scolds the intimidating assassin for not working before his injuries have fully healed.
In the 2003 anime series, Rick is the younger of two Ishvalan orphan brothers living in the slums of Central City. He and his brother Rio befriend Scar and later Alphonse Elric after the young alchemist develops doubts about his identity and becomes estranged from Edward. Unlike his older brother, Rick fondly remembers his mother (who died in the Ishbal War) and spends much of his appearance arguing against his brother. Rick is kidnapped by a group of mercenaries hired to hunt down Ishvalans and rebels, but when Rio, Alphonse, Scar, his grandfather, Edward, and Winry come to his rescue, the young boy is struck in the chest by a dagger.
Fortunately, his mother's locket protects him from harm and falls apart, revealing the eye medicine it contains, and it is explained to the brothers that their mother had not run away to save herself, as Rio had thought, but rather suffered from an eye deficiency and only ran away to find them because she could not see in front of her. As evidenced in episode 36, he may have PTSD as a result of his experiences during the Ishval Civil War. As a curiosity, he is almost two years older than Alphonse therefore he and Edward were born in the same year just on different dates.
