Character Description: Adam
Adam is designated the 1st Angel to ever come into Earth, discovered in Antarctica during the Katsuragi Expedition. Described as a huge, glowing being; humans tried to capture this Angel in it's embryo form and thus caused the Second Impact to take place.
Adam is similar to the Evangelions because the EVA's came from this angel. Adam caused the melting of Antarctica and many of the other problems that hurt the world.
Adam's Gender
There is some controvery over Adam's gender. Based on the name, one would expect Adam to be male. However, in episode 24 when Kaworu is approaching Lilith under the assumption (or pretense thereof) that the angel is Adam, Kaworu says, "Adam, the entity that is our mother", indicating that Adam is female (otherwise the word "father" would have been used, or a neutral word such as "creator" or "progenitor"). But then it's also possible that Adam has no gender at all, and that the word "mother" just happened to be the word that Kaworu without having any intended meaning towards actual gender.
