Character Description: Gold Roger
Luffy's hero and the Pirate King who was the first to sail the Grand Line and return alive. He was raised and executed in Rogue Town. Gol D. Roger only made two trips into those dangerous waters before he returned to Rogue Town and was captured by the Navy. In the crowd of onlookers was a young Smoker who heard Rogers famous speech about his riches in the Grand Line.
There are many theories of how Gol D. Roger was executed since it was never shown; in the anime dub he was hung by the gallows, in the Japanese version he was slashed by Navy men with swords, in the Manga it says he was stabbed by the swords, and other sources say his head was cut off.
The other thing about him was that even before he was killed he was grinning, he even laughed before he was killed after making his speech.
Editor's Note: Many fans speculated that Gold Roger was Luffy's grandfather. We find out in chapter 431 of the manga that Vice Admiral Garp is actually the grandfather of Luffy and Ace... however, everybody has two sets of grandparents, one set from each parent, so it may still be possible that Gold Roger is Luffy's grandfather.
