The Tenchi Muyo! Franchise
Tenchi Muyo! helped define the harem-comedy genre: an ordinary boy, a houseful of alien women (a space pirate, two warring princesses, a ditzy galaxy detective, and more), and the chaos that follows. It exists in several separate continuities that retell and remix the same core cast, so there's no single canonical order. Pick a continuity and dive in.
Where to start with Tenchi Muyo!
The continuities don't connect, so start with whichever version appeals:
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OVA)
The original, and the version creator Masaki Kajishima considers canon. Start here for the definitive take on the story and cast.
The first OVA series (1992) runs six episodes, with later installments continuing the saga over the years. It's denser and more lore-heavy than the TV spinoffs, the backbone the rest of the franchise grew from.
Tenchi Universe
The 26-episode TV series that introduced many Western fans to Tenchi through Toonami. A standalone alternate continuity that retells the premise with its own spin.
More episodic and comedy-forward than the OVA, and a complete self-contained run rather than an ongoing saga. A good entry if you want the TV version a lot of people grew up on.
Tenchi in Tokyo
A second TV continuity that moves Tenchi to the city and shakes up the formula with a new love interest and a darker arc.
Its own separate retelling, unconnected to Tenchi Universe or the OVA. The most divisive of the TV series among fans, but worth a look once you've sampled the others.
Tenchi Muyo! GXP
A spinoff set in the OVA continuity, following a different unlucky young man drafted into the Galaxy Police rather than Tenchi himself.
26 episodes of space-faring comedy with a fresh lead, so it works as a lighter standalone entry. Richer with some OVA context, but enjoyable on its own.
OVA Continuity (Ryo-Ohki)
Creator Masaki Kajishima's canonical line, the densest and most lore-heavy version of Tenchi. The original Ryo-Ohki OVAs anchor it, with later spinoffs set in or around the same master continuity.
Tenchi Universe
A standalone TV continuity (1994) that retells the premise across 26 episodes, plus its two theatrical films. More episodic and comedy-forward than the OVA. This is the version that aired on Toonami.
Tenchi in Tokyo
A third continuity (1997), separate from both the OVA and Tenchi Universe, that relocates Tenchi to the city and introduces a new love interest. The most stylistically distinct of the TV series.
Films
The standalone second Tenchi film. (The first and third films, Tenchi Muyo in Love and Tenchi Forever!, follow the Tenchi Universe continuity and are listed under it above.)
