The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a 1980 entry in Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater, the celebrated series that adapted a classic work of Western literature each year. Directed by Hiroshi Saito, it brings Mark Twain's novel to life across 49 episodes set in the sleepy Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg.

It follows the mischievous, daydreaming Tom Sawyer and his free-spirited friend Huckleberry Finn through whitewashed-fence schemes, games of pirates and robbers, cave explorations, and a chilling brush with a killer whose crime they alone have witnessed. Drawing on both Twain's Tom Sawyer and its sequel Huckleberry Finn, the series balances lighthearted boyhood adventure with the warmth and gentle nostalgia the World Masterpiece Theater was known for.

The original anime is titled simply The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; Huckleberry Finn is not a separate series but Tom's closest friend, featured throughout, and the English broadcast billed the two boys together.
