Character Profile: Kaname Kuran

Kaname is the President of the moon dorm. His parents were murdered by his Uncle Rido (Senri's father). He is Yuki's savior. Kaname cares deeply about Yuki. Yuki adores him. He and Yuki are siblings and they're engaged. He was both feared and respected by the other students of the Night Class. Purebloods inherited the powers of strong ancient vampires. Purebloods have powers to control other vampires. He is both jealous and angry of Zero for biting Yuki, drinking her blood, and endangered her life. He allow Zero to live. The reason is Zero's death will make Yuki sad.

Kaname's Age

Originally I was told that Kaname was 18 years old, which comes from the Vampire Knight Official Fanbook by Matsuri Hino. I was also told that in the manga Kaname was about eight when Yuki was five. If he shattered Rido's body when he was about eight, which according to Rido was "ten years ago", that would make him 18. However, someone else then pointed out that he was a teenager when he saved 5 year old Yuki. So if she is 15 now, and he was lets say 13 at the time, then he would be about 23 now. I have no official source for this information, though, so I would consider this with a grain of salt. We also must keep in mind that he is a vampire, and we know that vampires age differently than humans. And, since also in the anime series Takuma Ichijou-senpai celebrated his 18th birthday (in vampire years, as asked by Yuuki herself) in episode 2 or 3, we can also safely conclude and agree that the timeline in the anime and manga are the same, although with slight changes in the details and order of events. Besides, his true age is over 10,000 years old.

In the manga it is stated that Kaname Kuran is the ancestor of the whole Kuran family. He was sleeping in a coffin under the Kuran mansion when Rido took Jurai and Haruka's (his younger brother and sister's) first born child, a son named Kaname also, and was going to sacrifice the child to bring the original Kaname back from his sleep. The original Kaname was angered about the death of the child and attacked Rido by drinking his blood. Rido ran away and Kaname turned himself into a baby to either replace Jurai and Haruka's child and/or because he was weak at the time.

So Kaname basically has two ages, body age and sould age. He lived 10 thousand years ago, then decided to put himself in a eternal sleep after his lover died. He was awakened by Rido by the time the Kuran´s newborn son also named Kaname was killed by Rido to revive him. Full of remorse and regret, Kaname decided to take the place of the dead newborn, and forced his own body to transform into a baby. Thus he was raised as Kaname Kuran, and is indeed 18, one year older than Zero, two years older than Yuuki.
