9 Best Katana Wielding Anime Characters Posted Jun 2, 2022
It's common practice for the otaku from all over the world to argue about which anime character is strongest, Goku vs. OPM and Itachi vs. Madara. However, one unpopular argument goes to the Japanese katana-wielding characters of the anime universe.
Popular anime such as Samurai Champloo, Bleach, One-piece, Inuyasha, Misfit of Demon King Academy, etc., featured OP sworders with undefeatable skills. But, in a battle of Otakus, which characters come out on top?
9 Favourite Anime Swordsmen
The conventional sworders in anime are usually in two distinct categories, samurai sword.
wielders, and strong sword fighters. The samurai have traditionally featured in Edo period Japanese anime and some fantasy types. But, before we go too far off-topic, let's dive into everyone's favorite sworders:
Roronoa Zoro (One-Piece)
If you're a one-piece fan, you've probably seen Zoro in action with his unique sword style. If you aren't a one-piece fan, but you've heard of the anime, then you probably know the infamous Zoro, one of the straw hat pirates who has an exciting sword style and pride rivaling even Escanor.
Kenshin Himura (Samurai X)
Kenshin Himura remains an icon in anime history. With his dark past, exciting looks, and killer instincts, Kenshin's use of the sword is not unique but an accurate display of his resolve. He is one of the actual embodiments of a samurai in anime.
Guts (Berserk)
Guts works with instinct, sheer power, and supernatural ability to make wielding a broadsword spectacular. Living in a nightmarish world does not stop this character from displaying his sword skills and sheer ferocity.
Sakata Gintoki (Gintama)
The forever jovial, somewhat stupid main character of Gintama turned out to be an incredibly skilled, quite intense swordsman with the ability to sharpen just about any blade he wields. Though the main point of the anime seems to be a comedy, Gintama occasionally displays just how deadly a wooden sword can be in the wrong hands…or should we say the right one?
Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)
A rather powerful force to reckon with, Ichigo wields his sword, Zangetsu, and displays new abilities and superb sportsmanship in every battle. He's one of the anime characters demonstrating the power of sheer hard work and never giving up.
Saber (Fate)
What happens when Arthur becomes a woman? She is a fearsome sword wielder with abilities that surpass mere human imaginations. Not only is she an excellent sword wielder, but Arthur also displays her wisdom and battle process in this captivating anime.
Mugen (Samurai Champloo)
Mugen displays both great offense and defense abilities. His rough, unhinged fighting style shows just how scary a samurai who isn't afraid to play dirty is. As great a dancer as a swordsman, his role in Samurai Champloo made it a worthwhile watch.
Hyakkimaru (Dororo)
Hyakkimaru displays sword skills that demand recognition. He is a capable fighter who shows his sheer will by surviving after becoming a product of his father's thirst for power. Hyakkimaru not only fought with a sword, he even utilized his limbs (or lack thereof) as weapons.
Tanjiro Hamada (Demon Slayer)
Ever the happy-go-lucky guy, Tanjiro displays what a desire to rise above life's problems can look like. Amidst a sea of lost comrades, broken swords, and scary little sisters, Tanjiro has grown to be as unique a swordsman as he is a person.
Anime is full of many swordsmen and women whose skills can't even be quantified with words. You can always find exciting new ones with new anime discoveries.
