No one could have predicted just how popular Sailor Moon would become. Based on the manga comic of the same name, which launched in 1991, the Sailor Moon Japanese anime television series, which launched a year later in 1992, has been sold to territories all around the world and dubbed into numerous languages. If you’re a fan of the student who is also a Pretty Soldier defending the earth from an assortment of evil enemies, there are several other anime series that you’re sure to love. Here are five you should check out.
Wedding Peach
In Wedding Peach, three friends are chosen by a man from another world to become Love Angels, with the purpose to defeat the interdimensional evil enemy that is spreading hate throughout the world. There are a lot of similarities between Wedding Peach and Sailor Moon, such as the characters’ designs, which were actually created by Sailor Moon designer Kazuko Tadano. Furthermore, the voice actress of Sailor Moon herself, Kotono Mitsuishi, has a bit part in Wedding Peach as a villain.
Princess Tutu
Princess Tutu is similar to Sailor Moon in that it’s the story of a magical girl. But unlike Sailor Moon in which a girl turns into a superhero, this anime series is about a duck who turns into a girl who in turn becomes a ballet dancer. The series is inspired by the likes of Swan Lake and The Ugly Duckling. The plot involves Princess Tutu attempting to find the pieces of a prince’s heart, having been shattered by a villainous crow.

Yuki Yuna Is A Hero
While this series is darker than Sailor Moon, it’s similar in many ways, including the way in which the characters develop and form relationships. The story involves Yūna, Mimori, Itsuki, and Fū, who are all part of the Sanshu Middle School Hero Club, being transported to a forest full of evil creatures who are attacking a magical tree. With the help of a special app, the foursome is soon transformed into magical heroes who attempt to stop the villainous monsters.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
A list of recommended anime for Sailor Moon fans wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Sure, it’s different in tone and content, but it takes the magical girl genre to a new level and is quite simply one of the best anime series you’ll see. The story involves a group of school girls battling surreal enemies. With an engaging plot, complex narrative, gorgeous animation, and a fantastic soundtrack, it’s no wonder Madoka Magica received widespread critical acclaim upon its release in 2011 and won numerous awards.
Revolutionary Girl Utena
The 1997 anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena, based on the manga comic book, follows an orphaned teenage tomboy who wishes to be a prince. She soon finds herself competing in a series of sword duels for the hand of a mysterious girl called Anthy Himemiya who possesses the power to revolutionize the world. Many of Sailor Moon’s production crew worked on Revolutionary Girl Utena, so the series has a similar pace and look, but it has a darker psychological side than Sailor Moon. Revolutionary Girl Utena has received plenty of critical acclaim since its release. The series has spawned a number of spin-off media, including a video game and even a stage musical.
