Dragon Ball Watch Order
Good news: Dragon Ball is one continuous story, so it mostly runs top to bottom. The two things that trip people up are the Z-versus-Kai choice (the same sagas in two different cuts) and where GT fits (the older sequel that the canon later set aside). The order below sorts both out: the numbered steps are the canonical spine, and the dimmed entries are an alternative or an optional aside rather than extra steps.
Main saga
One story, in order. The big decision is just how much filler you'll tolerate, which is what the Z and Kai notes are about. Watch the numbered steps; treat the dimmed ones as a swap or a side trip.
Dragon Ball
Where it all begins. A young Goku hunts the wish-granting Dragon Balls, enters martial-arts tournaments, and faces his first world-level threats. Lighter and more adventure-driven than the Z era, and the foundation for everything after.
Dragon Ball Z
The iconic continuation most Western fans grew up on: an adult Goku, escalating transformations, and stakes that climb from planetary to universal. The original broadcast cut is famously padded, so many newcomers watch the trimmed Kai recut below instead of this one.
Dragon Ball Z Kai Optional
An alternative to Z above, not an addition: the same sagas re-edited to cut filler and track the manga, with a fresh dub. Watch Kai or the original Z, whichever you prefer, but not both.
Dragon Ball GT Optional
The original post-Z sequel, made as an anime original without Akira Toriyama writing it. Later largely set aside in favor of Super, so treat it as an optional curiosity rather than required viewing.
Dragon Ball Super
The canonical continuation, supervised by Toriyama: gods of destruction, multiverse tournaments, and new transformations. The official next chapter after Z, and it supersedes GT in the timeline.
Dragon Ball DAIMA
The last project Toriyama worked on before his death. A self-contained side story that shrinks the cast down to children, set during the Z era rather than pushing the timeline forward, so it's a detour more than a sequel.
Movies
The theatrical films in release order. The early ones are standalone alternate-take adventures you can watch any time or skip entirely; from Battle of Gods onward they're canon and tie into Super.
Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle Optional
An early standalone adventure from the original Dragon Ball era. Non-canon side fun.
Mystical Adventure Optional
Another standalone original-era film that reshuffles the familiar cast into an alternate story.
Fusion Reborn Optional
A standalone Z-era film, best remembered for the Goku-and-Vegeta fusion and an undead army led by a certain dictator. Pure non-canon spectacle.
The Path to Power Optional
A 10th-anniversary retelling of the original Dragon Ball's opening arc. A polished standalone version of the beginning.
Battle of Gods
The first canon film and the start of the Super era, introducing the god of destruction Beerus. Its story is also retold within the Super TV series, so watch the film or the series version (many prefer the film).
Resurrection 'F'
Canon: Frieza's return. Like Battle of Gods, it was folded into Super's TV run, so the series covers this ground too.
Super: Broly
Canon, and set after Super's TV run, so this is the one modern film the series doesn't cover. A franchise-favorite reworking of Broly's origin; watch it after Super.
