Character Profile: Grandfather Bernadotte

In a flashback, a young Pip Bernadotte had run home to his grandfather, crying about being teased by his schoolmates that 'he came from a family who killed for money'. However, the young boy was shocked and horrified to learn that his grandfather had confirmed his classmates' taunts. Grandfather then went on that Pip's own father was killed in Columbia just before his birth – mostly to earn money for his son and had simply bitten off more than he could chew!

So when Pip begged his grandfather on the reasons of why so many people had to die, Grandfather went on to say that the reasons did not matter. For over four generations, the men of the Bernadotte family were mercenaries, and for them – as well as Grandfather – the money was the main reason for the job. There were other men that had fought for one reason or another, be it fame, national pride, women, or mere substance. However, the money was good enough for Grandfather... it paid the bills. He then went on that Pip would eventually see the truth in his words.
