He is Negi's father although they have only met briefly, 6 years ago. In the anime he also stayed with Asuna for a year, when she was 6. Although he rarely shows up, he plays an important plot role in that Negi is trying to be like him and that is what drives his actions.

After Nagi was gone, he appeared to Negi, giving his son the staff that Negi now carries.
