Character Profile: Sayo Muto

Sayo Muto is the preacher of the Christian Japanese. She preached with her older brother Shougo Muto, otherwise known as Shoujo Amakusa, to whom she was deeply devoted, and their main chapel is located in the town of Shimabara.

Historically, Shimabara was known for persecuting the Christian Japanese and many people lost their lives in this conflict, including Shougo and Sayo's parents, who were slaughtered. Shougo and Sayo fled to Holland with their uncle returning to Shimabara years later.

Magdaria's (Sayo's) christian followers think she is the "Holy Mother", because she is kind, caring and compassionate, and teaches to show mercy on everyone, even on your enemies. Unfortunately, Magdaria is dying of tuberculosis, which also afflicted her mother. Sanosuke Sagara falls in love with her, but she dies from a gunshot wound from Santoh's gun and possibly complications from her TB as well.
