Character Profile: Larva

Larva is Miyu's friend, protector, and the only one who could possibly understand her. He is bound to her, following her everywhere, helping to return all Shinma to the darkness. Very much in love, the pair believes that once they have taken care of all Shinma, they too may also return to the darkness, together forever. But it was not always this way...

Larva was originally sent to kill Miyu, to exterminate the girl before the vampire inside her could awaken. But his pitty for the young thirteen-year-old delayed him too long, and when the time came to end her life, his touch awakened her instead. She took his blood, and had him replace it with her own. And so now the would-be assasin is forever bound to serve and protect Miyu. His failure so shameful that he may never speak, and constantly hides behind a mask.

In the television series, not only can Larva speak, but he can also occasionally remove his mask. In the two-part episode "Light of the Sea", Miyu was already the guardian when Larva first faced her. The two fought and Larva thrust his sharp hands through Miyu's body. However, Miyu managed to sink her fangs into his neck. Once their blood mingled, Larva learned of Miyu and her destiny and promised to follow her for all time. Apparently, the mask he wears is proof of his servitude to Miyu and doesn't prevent him from speaking (unlike in the OVA episodes).
