Character Profile: Seita

Seita is the son of a naval officer so he and his family receive better treatment then other families. However, that doesn't save him when his house is destroyed during the fire bombings in Kobe, Japan. After his mother dies, he is in charge of taking care of his little sister, Setsuko.

Seita, despite the situation he is in, is rather carefree. Though when Setsuko and Seita leave their aunt's care, he starts to worry more and resorts to stealing. He loves his sister and Japan very much.

Seita is the brother of Setsuko and (in a way) is like a father to her. Seita cares about making his sister happy during World War II. With their mother dead (she was killed by a bomb), their father at war (he dies by not being able to land the plane), and their aunt being mean, it is Seita's responsibility to take care of Setsuko.

Running away from their aunt, he chooses to have him and his sister live in a shelter he found. Everything was fine until his sister became ill and died. Seita tried to survive without her, but he dies of starvation at the subway in the end of the movie.
