Character Description: Evangelion Unit 03
The destruction of NERV's second branch in the United States had forced the delivery of the fourth Evangelion, Unit 03, to Japan so that it would join in the battle of the Angels. However, during the activation test at NERV's second base at Matsusura, the Evangelion was possessed by the 13th Angel, taking control of the unit—and imprisoning the Fourth Child, Toji Suzahara.
As a result, all three operational Evangelion units were mustered to Matsusura. But Units 00 and 02 were quickly defeated, and it looked as if Unit 01 would be defeated as well. Shinji (who didn't even know that his friend Toji was piloting) refused to fight, fearing for the pilot's life.
Disgusted with his son's inaction, Gendo Ikari then ordered the activation of Unit 01's "Dummy Plug" system, which was recently installed. Shinji was then forced to watch helplessly as Unit 01 savagely destroyed Unit 03, reducing the Evangelion to unsalvageable pieces. It was only after the battle that Shinji learned that Toji was aboard Unit 03.
Toji survived the battle, but lost both his left arm and left leg as a result.
