Character Description: Kiyone Masaki

Kiyone Masaki (not to be confused with Kiyone Makibi) was the first wife of Nobuyuki Masaki, and mother of Tenchi and Tennyo Masaki. She was a loving, kind person, although a bit of a joker, a trait she inherited from her mother Airi Masaki. She was also a good cook, and had taught Rea Masaki how to cook.

However, in the last years of Kiyone's life, she had suffered an affliction in her old age which had caused her to commit harmless but senseless jokes on people... including baby Tenchi, which she would often write crude comments on the boy's forehead while he slept, for which she would later regret. On her worst days, she had asked her daughter Tennyo, who looked exactly like Kiyone, to take care of Tenchi in her stead.

Before her death, she asked her husband Nobuyuki and her father Katsuhito to tell Tenchi when he got older how she died. However, the stories she concocted made absolutely no sense at all, and when Tenchi finally found out the truth of what happened, he got angry, mostly because what little memory he had about her were of a loving, kind person. It took Rea to explain what had happened, and Tenchi was able to reconcile his feelings about Kiyone, not to mention apologizing to Nobuyuki for getting angry.

Note: In OVA 1, there was a mistake in translation during the dub, and Kiyone Masaki was cast as Tenchi's grandmother as a result. That error was corrected in OVA 2.
