Character Description: First Lieutenant Rip Van Winkle
Rip van Winkle was originally an officer in the Waffen SS during World War II, and was a member of Order 666, or Millennium, which was charged with producing artificial vampires for the Third Reich. However, Rip was wounded severely when the original labs in Warsaw were destroyed by a young Walter C. Dolnez and Alucard (who had the body of a young girl). She later accompanied the "Letztes Battalion" (the Last Battalion) to Brazil, along with the Major, the Captain, and the Doctor.
Like Zorin Blitz, Tubalcain Alhambra and the Valentine Brothers, Rip was made into a FREAK (artificial vampire), a product of a microchip created by the Doctor, giving her enhanced speed and strength (but it did not fix her poor eyesight, which she has to wear glasses for). Rip is also armed with a long-barreled flintlock musket, a notoriously-inaccurate firearm. However, the armament the musket fires has the ability to seek-out and destroy its target – sometimes bringing down several targets in one shot, from living beings to missiles and warplanes. Rip refers to this as 'punishing all without distinction'.
Rip is also extremely fond of opera, and often sings during her attacks. She is particularly fond of the opera "Der Freischütz", and identifies herself with Kaspar, one of the heroes in the opera (her musket is oddly identical to the magical weapon Kaspar uses). In fact, she so much identifies herself with the character that it proved to be her ultimate undoing. When she was ultimately confronted by Alucard in the North Atlantic during Millennium's attack on London, she was terrorized beyond reason, calling the vampire "Samiel", the name of the Devil in "Der Freischütz", who takes Kaspar to Hell in the opera. Alucard kills Rip by drinking her blood, but she wasn't set aflame by the Doctor, as was Alhambra. She had done her job in stranding Alucard aboard the carrier H.M.S. Eagle, and the Major gives her a proper memorial as a result. However, because the crew was killed by Rip earlier, Alucard used the carrier as a ghost ship in order to return to the burning London to the final battle with Millennium.
