I beat Uninvited for NES without dying! This was another great game for the Halloween season. It's very similar to Shadowgate, just replace the creepy castle with a haunted house. Thankfully there's no more worrying about lighting torches every so often to stay alive. Most of the puzzles were fairly straightforward but a couple were quite obscure. My first playthrough took about 5-6 hours but on the 4th go around I got that down to just under 30 minutes. If was a fun game but I think it's time to move on to something with a bit more action.

I beat Shadowgate for NES without dying and lighting only 3 additional torches! This one was fun! Exploring a creepy castle with death lurking at every turn was a perfect choice for the spooky Halloween season. I think a few of the puzzles were unfairly difficult but the deaths screens are fun and you're always placed back in the previous room with everything you had just prior to dying so even those obscure puzzles weren't terrible, just time consuming. Playing this reminded me of another point-and-click adventure game that I never got a chance to play, Uninvited, so maybe I'll check that out next.

I beat Rygar (NES) without dying! I had this as a kid but this is the first time I beat it without dying. I think it's actually one of the easier NES games I had. Unlimited continues with re-spawns on the current stage, no tricky platforming, and once you get powered up you can make quick work of just about any enemy, including bosses. Really fun action/adventure game and not too challenging.

I beat Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle (SNES) on Expert difficulty using male Ranma Saotome! I've never been great at fighting games so this was quite a challenge. I didn't realize it was a fighting game when I picked it, I just wanted to try a Ranma 1/2 game since I love the anime so much. There were a couple characters in the game I didn't remember, Gosunkugi and Gambling King, and was shocked that Tatewaki Kuno wasn't in the game since he's a very prominent character in the anime.

I beat Ninja Gaiden (NES) using only the sword and no continues! I owned this as a kid and it is one tough game even with the secondary weapons! The enemy respawns are crazy and it's so easy to die just from getting knocked off of a ledge. After beating it normally I didn't think there'd be any way I could do a no-continue run so instead I challenged myself to do it without using any sub-weapons. Having no projectiles or spin-slash to rely on makes certain sections extremely challenging. I finally succeeded last week and then last night did it without using any continues.

I beat Altered Beast (Sega Genesis) on the hardest difficulty with no continues! I had replayed and beaten this about a year ago but wanted to revisit it after discovering RetroAchievements.com. To earn all the achievements and "master" the game meant I had to beat it on the hardest difficulty without using any continues. After a little practice I got there using maxed out health and lives. Then I kept going until I was able to do it with the default amount of health and lives. I had already earned the Master title by that point so that challenge was just for me. I beat Maniac Mansion (NES)! This isn't the first time as it's one I owned as a kid but it's been many, many years. This time I played several different character combinations until I beat every ending. Using Michael was by far the fastest as he gets to skip all the puzzles needed to access Nurse Edna's safe. I really like how different kids are able to solve different puzzles which really aides in replayability. It's a great game and I love the comedy but I think I prefer The Secret of Monkey Island.

I beat Barbie (NES)! Er... that is to say I beat the Barbie videogame. This is another one I never played as a kid. After beating A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th I was looking for something a little more on the lighter side and seeing a commercial for the upcoming Barbie movie inspired me to seek this one out. It turned out to be a fairly easy game. I got through it on my second attempt and did it without continues the next day. I get that it was made for kids but still seems like they could have added a bit more to it.

I beat A Nightmare on Elm Street (NES)! I never played this as a kid. I decided to try it out after beating Friday the 13th. I found this game much more enjoyable, though I definitely got frustrated with its unfair hit detection for projectiles. The core concept is cool but the stage bosses could have been more representative of the Freddy creatures from the movies and the final boss was pathetically easy when using dream powers.

I beat Friday the 13th (NES)! This isn't one I played as a kid and had no experience with it. I wasted so much time trying to figure it out on my own. Lighting all the fireplaces, exploring the caves and woods, and fighting Pamela Voorhees are all pretty much useless. Eventually I looked up some tips. Getting the torch early on was the biggest help, along with understanding how Jason moves around the map. I believe this playthrough is of my first time beating it which was several weeks ago. I continued playing in an attempt to save all kids while losing no counselors. I got better and was able to at least save all the children but was never able to save everyone. And honestly, I don't find it that enjoyable of a game to keep spending time with it so I think it's time to move on. Sorry, counselors!

I beat Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES)! I first played this at my friend Chris Bailey's house back in the 80s when it came out. It's another one of those Nintendo-hard classics that I had yet to beat. Although immensely frustrating at times, thanks to unlimited continues I was able to reign victorious within a week. And it turns out you have to play it through twice to get the good ending, with the first loop being just an illusion and the second loop having faster moving enemies. I did that, but the playthrough was pretty long so I challenged myself to do better. I briefly thought about trying for a no-continue run but the game is just too luck-based and I'd probably be playing it for months before I could accomplish that. So instead I chose to do it without using the knife, by far the best weapon in the game. It took a lot of practice but I finally got there.

Was it worth spending every evening after work this past week and most of the weekend playing? Yes, yes it was.

I beat Battletoads (NES) without using warps or continues! This is widely considered to be one of the hardest games out there and its reputation is well deserved. Obstacles are often obstructed from view until the instant you need to react and many have no room for error so only a perfectly-timed, perfectly-positioned reaction will save you from instant death. Plus, your character tends to slide a little when landing from a jump or punching enemies which makes it real easy to accidentally slide off the edge of a platform to your death. And if all that wasn't hard enough, most bosses have instant death kills. Combine all this with only three lives and three continues. So yeah, this is a hard game. Memorization and precision is key. But after playing it almost every day for the past four weeks I was finally able to get there without using any cheats, warps, or continues! Have you played it? If so, how far did you get?

I beat Mega Man (NES) without using continues! The difficulty on this is brutal so it's nice they give you unlimited continues. This is one I owned as a kid so definitely beat it before, but this is the first time I did it without using continues. The journey getting there was not an easy one and was filled with expletives, especially when playing Iceman's stage, but I finally got there and earned a celebratory donut!

I beat Mickey Mousecapade (NES) without dying! This is the one and only videogame my little sister had when we were kids and it was just way to hard. So I decided to give it another go about a week ago. I beat it a few days later but it was a horrible playthrough that took an hour and twenty minutes, mainly due to tons of issues I encountered in that castle. But after a bit of practice I was able to beat it in 20 minutes without dying. Take that!

I beat The Karate Kid (NES) without dying! Played this very briefly as a kid, probably at a friend's house but really don't remember. Started playing it again about 4 days ago and OMG that kickback effect is killer, especially when you get caught between two enemies making you feel like you're in A Night at the Roxbury. I finally beat it tonight, twice actually. The first time I had died only once so gave it a few more tries and was able to do it without dying. Even after all my playthroughs, I was still never able to master the Swinging Hammer dodge.

I beat Pro Wrestling (NES) undefeated with Starman! This is not a game I owned as a kid but definitely played with friends. I was always fond of Starman as I loved his Somersault Kick and Flying Cross Chop. Never really tried to beat it on single player mode until a couple weeks ago and succeeded a couple days later. Then I discovered RetroAchievements.org and spent the next week trying to beat it again to get the achievements. Just succeeded today, but this video is of last week's playthrough. I found the easiest way to win a match is to trap your opponent outside the ring as the 20 count runs out. Have to be careful, though, as they can do the same to you!

I beat Fester's Quest (NES) with no continues! Never played this as a kid so my first experience with it started earlier this week. After seeing it in an AVGN episode and listed on Wikipedia's list of Nintendo Hard games I was expecting it to be more of a challenge. I suppose it would have been had I not used a turbo controller, but the instruction manual actually recommends doing so. Besides, I'm trying to have fun here, not get carpal tunnel. The most frustrating thing about the game is that it sends you back to the very beginning when you die. If you power up your gun and whip to the max as soon as possible, it's pretty easy to avoid getting killed. Then you just have to worry about the bosses. They all have fairly simple patterns making it easy to avoid their hits. The challenging part is figuring out when you can hit them back. I spent a lot of time on that shield guy before figuring out I could hit him in a sweet spot while his shield was still up.
