Recently rolled out a few site improvements:

Find a Gallery Faster

The image gallery now has A–Z letter buckets along the top – click a letter to jump straight to galleries whose anime title starts there. There’s also a search box that filters every gallery by name as you type, with the same accent and punctuation-insensitive matching as the navbar search. Much faster than paginating through every page to track down a specific anime's screenshots.

Inline Audio & Video Clips

Old sound clips on profile pages were saved as WMA or RealAudio files, formats that haven't played in browsers for years. They've been converted to MP3 and now show up as collapsible inline audio players right where they appear, with both a play button and a download link. Profile pages with video clips now gather them into a dedicated Video Clips section with inline players. Both this and the Audio Files section show up in the in-page navigation sidebar so you can jump straight to them.

Fewer Third-Party Cookies

The site used to load Google Analytics on every page and embed YouTube videos in a way that dropped tracking cookies the moment the page rendered. Both have been cleaned up: Google Analytics is gone (site traffic stats now come from server-side log analysis), and the YouTube embeds have been switched to the privacy-enhanced variant so they don't set any cookies until you actually press play. As a side benefit, pages load a little faster and the site doesn't need one of those annoying EU cookie consent banners.

I beat DuckTales (NES) on the hardest difficulty getting the good ending without dying! I used to watch DuckTales after school as part of the Disney Afternoon but somehow missed out on getting to play the NES game. After beating Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, and having already beaten Darkwing Duck, I figured I'd give this a go. I'm sure glad I did, as just like those other two this turned out to be a great game. It truly feels like a globe trotting adventure with Scrooge McDuck. The music, graphics, and controls were all spot-on. It would have been nice to have the other characters involved a bit more but you can't have everything.

A few site improvements rolled out this past week:

Search From the Navbar

The Anime and Characters menus in the top navigation now include a search box right under the alphabet links. Type a name and matches appear instantly – case-insensitive, punctuation-insensitive, and accent-insensitive (typing “morte” finds Morté, “yu gi oh” finds Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc.). Use ↑/↓ arrow keys to step through results without leaving the search box, and press Enter to open the highlighted profile.

“Characters on this Page”

When you’re viewing an anime profile or one of its character pages, the Characters menu now lists every character profile from that anime right under the search box. Lets you jump between characters in a series without backtracking to the index.

Character Thumbnails on Profile Pages

Anime profile pages now show small thumbnails next to each name in the character list, the same way the main character index does. They lazy-load as you scroll so the page itself stays light.

Faster Pages

Most images across the site – thousands of JPGs, PNGs, and GIFs – have been converted to the modern WebP format. Photos shrank by an average of about 50%, screenshots and PNGs by over 90%, and animated GIFs are now animated WebPs. Same images, smaller downloads.

Fewer Cookies

Site preferences (dark mode toggle, background art choice, transparency, file explorer state) used to be stored in browser cookies that got sent on every request. They’re now kept in your browser’s localStorage instead, which means less data on the wire and less for tracking-aware browsers to flag.

Posted the anime profile of Dr. Stone. Fixed a lot of dead links on the site. Some I was able to update with a working replacement, but most had to be removed. Removed links are still visible in the text, they're just no longer clickable as normal links. Click one and you'll get a popup letting you know it's been classified as dead, with the option to try opening the original URL anyway.

We've made a number of improvements to the site over the past few weeks. Here's a rundown of what's new:

Dark Mode

The site now supports dark mode! A toggle button in the navigation bar lets you switch between your system's theme preference and its opposite. You can also choose Light, Auto, or Dark from the Site Preferences in the sidebar. Dark mode covers the entire site including the forums, and is designed to be easy on the eyes while maintaining the overall look and feel of the site.

Faster Page Loading

We've removed our dependency on the jQuery library, which means fewer files to download and faster page loads. The site's CSS and JavaScript files are now combined, minified, and served with gzip compression for even faster delivery.

Improved Mobile Experience

The mobile layout has received several improvements. The navigation bar no longer has wrapping issues at certain screen widths. The homepage links are properly centered in a grid layout. The anime, character, and HDLoader list pages now have responsive tables that adapt to narrower screens instead of requiring horizontal scrolling. Filter controls flex and wrap gracefully on smaller devices.

Anime List Genre Filtering

Selecting a genre on the anime list page now filters results on the server before sending them to your browser, significantly reducing page load times. Previously, all profiles were sent to the browser and filtered with JavaScript.

Updated Image Viewer & Dialogs

The image viewer (lightbox) and dialog popups have been rebuilt from the ground up. The new lightbox features keyboard navigation, smoother transitions, and auto-hiding controls. Dialogs and popups now load faster and look cleaner.

Improved Tooltips

The tooltip system has been completely rewritten. Tooltips now support multiple positioning modes, hoverable content, and work smoothly across all devices.

New Share Button

A Bluesky share button has been added alongside Twitter on the News & Updates pages.

Visual Refresh

Rating stars, warning icons, game compatibility indicators, and other small graphics throughout the site have been converted from GIF images to scalable SVG and CSS, resulting in crisper rendering on high-DPI displays. The contact form has been cleaned up with a modern layout. List page navigation now uses cleaner arrow icons and an "Add Profile" button on the filter bar.

Forum Improvements

The forum has received comprehensive dark mode styling. The avatar gallery on the profile editing page now uses a clean grid layout. Control panel pages have improved visual consistency between tabs, sidebar navigation, and content panels.

Improved the Image Galleries with better search engine visibility. Each gallery now has a unique page description and all images now include descriptive alt text.

Upgraded the Anime and Character index pages with real-time filtering. You can now filter by name, language, and genre instantly as you type without waiting for the page to reload. The filter bar and alphabetical navigation now stick to the top of the page as you scroll for easier browsing.

Removed the large advertisement at the top of the page for a better browsing experience.
