For weeks I have been unable to hide or remove spam Faceook comments. Every attempt to do so is met with the same response: "The content you requested cannot be displayed right now. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page." To be clear, the links I'm clicking are the ones in the Comment Moderation control panel. Since that doesn't seem like it's going to start working anytime soon, I've removed the Facebook comments system and replaced it with the Disquss comments system. All the Facebook comments still exist but unfortunately I don't know how to get them imported into Disquss. I've also been getting more spam through the contact form so I implemented Google reCAPTCHA v3 for that.

I beat Strider (Sega Genesis) on hard difficulty without continues! I owned both this and the NES Strider as a kid and enjoyed them immensely. I recently re-played and beat the NES version so I thought I'd tackle this one. It was fun figuring it all out again. To earn RetroAchievements mastery I had to beat it on the hard difficulty which I'd never attempted before. I was able to achieve that a week ago but had to use every continue and life to do so. "Not good enough," I said! So I kept trying and cussing until tonight when I finally beat it on hard difficulty without using any continues!

I beat Strider (NES) without dying! I owned and beat this as a kid but never without dying so that feels good. Though it's really not that difficult of a game if you can get past the wonky jump mechanics. It's so easy to get stuck to a wall, to bump your head mid-jump on a platform that doesn't even exist, or to not even jump when you press the button. Seriously, what the heck is up with the programming in this game? The messed up jump physics, the garbage sprites at the top and bottom of the screen, the pauses whenever a person you can talk to comes on screen, rarely having more than one enemy on screen at a time... it feels like a beta version. Still fun, though.

I beat The Battle of Olympus (NES) without dying! I had never played this before but people were comparing it to Zelda II which I love so I gave it a shot. I personally enjoyed playing Zelda II more. It could just be because I owned that as a kid, but in this one you don't get magic spells, the up-stab/down-stab techniques, or experience points to increase your levels. You just get a few upgrades here and there, and some only if you can afford them which means grinding for currency. There's also hardly anywhere to refill your heath so you end up grinding for that as well. Plus, I found it so easy to get lost without having an overworld map to help me navigate to various locations. This game didn't grab me from the get-go, but once I played it enough that I understood where to go I found it much more enjoyable. I actually played it so much that I realized I could skip an entire area!

I beat Top Gun (NES) without dying! What a deceptively difficult game! It's only four missions long and seems pretty easy until it's time to land your F-14 Tomcat on the aircraft carrier. That was a huge learning curve! Then there's the refueling, which is significantly easier than landing but still caused me to visit the afterlife quite a bit before I finally got it down. Even when I got pretty good at both of those, every mission beyond the first would throw bullets and missiles at me like they had gone out of style. And I swear at least a few of those missiles have some kind of phase-technology that let's my bullets pass through them as I can't even tell you how many times I was hit head-on even when my target reticle was right on it with my finger spamming that fire button. It took a lot of practice but I was finally able to beat it about a week ago, and last night I got my first no-death run.

I beat Ghostbusters (NES) without using the stairwell glitch! This is one of the few games I had as a kid which I couldn't beat. Like most people who attempted this game, I would always die in the stairwell on my way up to fight Gozer. Well, I decided to give it another try as an adult and after a couple days practice I was able to beat it! The key was playing long enough to purchase the extremely expensive Sound Generator which would slow down the stair ghosts and the ghost protection suit which would allow you to take a few additional hits. After figuring that out and practicing a bit I was able to reach Gozer fairly reliably, then it was a matter of trying different strategies against her until I found one that worked.

I beat Zelda II: The Adventure of Link without dying! I remember getting this game as a kid when it was first released, and although I was initially disappointed that it had different gameplay than the original I still really enjoyed playing it. I had definitely beaten it back then but never all in one sitting without dying or using a ton of continues. About a week ago I beat it without continues for the first time, and last night I was finally able to get my first no-death playthrough! It's definitely challenging but rarely does it feel unfair. I started re-playing this back towards the beginning of January so I'm definitely ready to move on to a new game.

I beat Blaster Master for NES without dying! I loved this game as a kid and it's one I owned so I definitely beat it before but this is my first time doing so without using continues or dying. I had forgotten how confusing the layout is when first playing and how easy it is to get lost. Eventually I learned to get around and which areas could be skipped. Back in the day I had maps from one of the Nintendo Power issues which had tips and a mini-poster that I put on my wall. It had a model of Jason's tank-like vehicle, Sophia, which just looked amazing.
