Added Myst III - Exile to the PS2 HDLoader Compatibility List.

We saw Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse this weekend and really enjoyed it. We also saw Bird Box on NetFlix which Treese heard everyone talking about at work, and it was fine. Not sure what all the buzz was about, we didn't think it was super amazing or anything. When it ended I had questions (spoilers ahead!).... why wouldn't the creatures go inside buildings? How did the group know that the creatures wouldn't go inside buildings, like the giant supermarket where they all took off the blindfolds once they got inside. If Gary was already infected when they let him into the house, why weren't his eyes all freaky and why weren't the birds totally freaking out like they did in the supermarket? When the rapids were approaching, why didn't they get out and walk the rest of the way. It's not like they had to keep going down the river for miles and miles after the rapids, their destination was right there. So yeah, liked it but wasn't in love with it. We also binge watched the TV show Titans this week which we enjoyed. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Years Eve tonight!

A couple days ago I implemented a feature where I would fade the background and prevent clicks whenever the dropdown menus were active in an attempt to prevent accidental clicks on Google AdSense ads that would be behind the menus. Afterwards I submitted the page for review to the AdSense team and today I received an email saying my page was reviewed and no policy violations were found, so it looks like my solution worked.

After I implemented my attempted solution of fading the background behind drop down menus to prevent accidental clicks, I submitted the page for review to the Adsense team. I got an email today saying my page was reviewed and no policy violations were found, so it looks like my solution worked.

Wednesday, December 26, 2018

When hovering over the main menu, everything behind it will now dim and prevent clicking. I did this because I received a policy violation report email and when I checked it said the violation was "Encouraging accidental clicks: Layout" on this specific page: Shirley Fenette. I looked over the page and didn't see any violation so I asked for help in the AdSense Help Forum and the response I received was that the dropdown menus can overlap the AdSense ads. I've had other pages reviewed after I've fixed other policy violations and none of the AdSense reviewers ever mentioned that the drop down menus were a problem, but I do understand the logic behind it. A user could accidentally slip off the menu slightly and click the ad by mistake. With this dimmed overlay, such accidents would be nearly impossible because it prevents all clicking on anything other than the menu and instead of disappearing instantly when the mouse goes off of the menu it fades away slowly.

I hope everyone had a good holidays! We spent this Christmas with my family. My Aunt Terri and Uncle Dean were in town so we got to visit with them a bunch which was really nice. Two days before Christmas we went out to dinner with Dad's side of the family at the tasty Black Bear Diner though the table was so long and we were on the end so didn't really get to visit with everyone there, but we did get to visit while we stood around in the lobby waiting for the table to be ready. On Christmas eve we went to see Bumblebee with my mom and oh my gosh it was actually a good live-action Transformers movie! We opened presents Christmas morning, then went to my cousin Tedd's new house which I hadn't seen before and I got to hold their little baby Zayne. He was so cute! And he shares my hairline....

My parents got us a unique gift this year, a land donation in our honor for The Wild Animal Sanctuary's new 9,004-acre Wild Animal Refuge that's being build in Southern Colorado. Mom had told me about her visit to the existing animal sanctuary and showed me a video of it and the new one larger one that's being built. Seems really cool where there are really long walkways built high up so you can explore the park and see the animals with them still being able to roam completely free. I'd urge everyone to check out their website and watch the videos: www.wildanimalsanctuary.org/.

It was cold this morning but I still went out and finished fixing the main water line for the backyard sprinklers. I cut a small piece of 1" PVC and glued it to the union connector to make a little pipe extension, then glued that to the other end of the screw on connector. After allowing that to dry for a few minutes I then glued the open end of the union connector to the existing pipe. After about 5 hours I turned on the water and checked leaks. Success! I'll check it again later and probably once more tomorrow morning before filling the hole in with all the buckets of dirt I excavated.

We heard running water last night outside my office window, the sound like when the sprinklers are running, but the sprinklers were off so I went out to investigate. I traced the sound to the back lawn where I found water rapidly bubbling up out of a spot in the grass. It was the general area where I had repaired two broken pipes eight years ago. I shut off the valve to the water line that runs back there and this morning went out and dug up that whole area. Once I got down to the pipes and cleaned them off enough so that I could get a decent view I discovered that one of the union connectors I had used in my previous repair was cracked. So I had to take a trip to Lowe's. I looked at various options but eventually bought the same union connector as before. It was one of those expansion ones with adjustable length slide-action. Only the non-sliding side of mine was broken but they didn't sell just one side so I had to get the whole thing. I also had to get a simple union connector so that I could make the pipe longer to account for having to cut off the old cracked part. By the time I got home and got the pipe cut it was getting too dark to do any gluing so I'll have to do that tomorrow.

I still haven't gotten around to opening it yet but I should probably do that soon just to make sure it works.

I watched Netflix's new She-Ra and the Princess of Power show over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I don't remember hardly anything of the original series since I haven't seen it since it originally aired back in 1985 but I feel like this is a well done update. I like the strong female characters, the diversity, the non-generic antagonists, the comedic moments, and the storyline that flows through the entire season. The artwork is good, definitely anime-influenced and similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I think they could have done something a little more unique with it, made it stand out more. But overall I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next season.

Friday, November 16, 2018

She-Ra and the Princess of Power debuted on Netflix a few days ago and despite eagerly awaiting this show since it was first announced I still haven't had the time to watch it yet. Now that the weekend has arrived we'll have the chance to binge on that and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Managing an anime website solo can be quite time consuming but also has its advantages, such as when receiving a free promotional She-Ra and the Princess of Power t-shirt and pack of special edition collector cards. I had my wife snap a picture of me wearing the shirt standing in front of our fireplace where you can see my original 1980s She-Ra figure up on the mantel standing next to Angela from Todd MacFarlane's Spawn. Unfortunately I don't have any of her original accessories other than her cape. The artwork for the new show looks like it has a strong anime influence similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender and from what I've seen of the previews it looks there is a more diverse cast of characters.

I installed an aftermarket stereo in my car yesterday. Had never done that before but it turned out to be fairly straightforward. I had to get a dashboard kit so that it would fit and I made sure to get one with included wire harnesses so I could solder the new stereo's wire harnesses to that then just plug it in rather than cutting into the factory default wires. I used heat shrink butt connectors since I had those and didn't have wire nuts laying around. I didn't have a heat gun so I used a candle to melt the solder and shrink the tubes. After I got the radio installed and the dashboard all put together I realized I forgot to plug in the antenna wire so I had to take it all apart again! The antenna wire was quite short and was a challenge to get plugged in. The whole process wasn't too difficult but it took quite a while, especially after dropping a screw and a socket into the well and trying to find and fish those out using a magnet glued to an old telescoping antenna.

There have been several times when a heat gun would have really come in handy so today I went to Harbor Freight to pick one up and return some nail nippers I bought a couple weeks ago which ended up not being able to nip any of the nails I tried. The guy who helped me was having a challenging time with the return due to their new computer system. Any gift card under $10 can be cashed out and this return was under $10 but it was still making him put the refund on a gift card, and on a new gift card, not the original one which we first tried with. So then I had 3 Harbor Freight gift cards. I went over and grabbed the heat gun and checked out but their system was having problems once again and wouldn't recognize any of the gift cards. It kept giving different error messages but the primary one was that the service was down. In the end they were unable to process any gift cards and suggested I try again later so I left without my heat gun and free pack of AAA batteries. I called later in the afternoon to see if it was working yet but it was not.

We went to a couple of Halloween parties this Saturday, with me dressing as Marty McFly and Treese being Doc Brown from the original Back to the Future movie. We went with their 1985 costumes when they were at the mall parking lot first testing the time machine. We put together the costumes mostly from stuff we had around the house and what we could find at Goodwill, and the orange puffer vest I had gotten at Kmart on clearance when they were going out of business. A short brown wig was the only piece we purchased new and while it didn't quite match Marty's hair style it was the best we could do on short notice and didn't look too bad.

I've only done some minor updates so far this month as I've been busy working on other things. And besides, nobody has submitted any new profiles recently. I don't mind writing up ones myself but to do that I actually need time to watch the anime.

Today I started digging a hole for a new tree we got. It was from Redding Electric Utility’s Energy-Saving Tree Program. I chose to plant it in the empty area outside my office as it putting it there will supposedly help provide shade and cool the house off in the summer, once it grows large enough. I found that the area appears to be more rock than dirt so the hole was slow going. I'm hoping to finish that up by tomorrow. Yesterday I cleaned out the gutters and blew a bunch of leaves and junk off the roof.

Before that I was working on fixing up my shed, replacing rotted wood and installing a tension wire to straighten out the door that was getting a little warped. I had to replace one of the roof plywood segments as it was completely rotted away due to there being no drip guard installed. When that was done I put on a new roof. Whoever build this shed originally didn't lay down the black felt paper before putting on their shingles, didn't use any drip guards, and used measly little half inch nails. I had felt paper leftover from the gazebo renovation but I had to buy drip guards and longer nails. I also had some shingles leftover but still had to buy another pack. I put on new shingles up to where the shed goes under the overhang of the house. I didn't see any way to nail in new shingles there with the gutter being in the way giving no room to get a hammer in so I just left the old shingles on from there up.

Before that I fixed up the section of fence that was behind the shed because one post there was completely rotted at the base and one of the 2x4 rails was rotted. I replaced them both with pressure treated wood. That repair job wasn't too bad except that it was right near some bushes which made it a little difficult to work hammering in all the fence planks.

For the past several days my neighbor and I had been building a new fence to replace the one that fell down a few weeks ago and yesterday we finally finished. With all the fires going on the air has been very smokey which meant wearing face masks the whole time. On the bright side, the smoke helped reduce the heat of the summer sun so instead of being over 100 degrees it was only in the 90s. Feels good to finally be done and I think it turned out pretty well.

Posted the character profile of Zen Wisteria (from Snow White with the Red Hair). Sorry for the lack of updates recently, I had been busy working on mobile app project which left little time for anything else.

I installed a ceiling fan in my office yesterday. It's something I had been thinking about doing recently because the room gets about 5-10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house, and with this 100+ degree weather we're having the rest of the house doesn't get below 84 degrees. I got the fan for free from someone on NextDoor.com then picked up a bracket from Lowes. The hardest part was crawling through the attic with it being around 102 degrees outside... a floor-less attic with blown-in insulation and spiderwebs everywhere. Three times I had to crawl through the attic because the first time I found that plastic box for the existing light fixture was nailed into a stud so I had to go back and get a hammer, then I realized I forgot to bring drill bits so had to go back and get those. Once the attic work was complete I found that the hole for the existing light fixture was too small for the new metal electrical box so I had to enlarge it with a utility knife. By that point my arms were exhausted so I had a tough time lining up the screw holes of the electrical box with the metal bracket, but once I got it locked in everything else was easy. Hopefully this will help cool things down.

Hard to believe a full year has passed since I last called Charter Spectrum to cancel our cable service. Each time the promo period ends and our rates go up I have to call to get put on another promotional rate. I'm sure many of you know that drill. Last year they initially said there were no promotions available for us so I talked it over with the wife and we decided to really cancel. That's when they offered us a better deal than any before: $75/month for internet, local channels, and 10 cable channels. Of course fees kicked that number up a bit, and those fees increased throughout the year so we were eventually paying almost $90/month.

Part of our promotional rate ended this month kicking our bill up to almost $100/month, so I called like normal but this time they didn't offer any new promotions. They simply asked why I wanted to cancel and when I told them it was just too much money they went ahead and accepted my cancellation request. I wasn't expecting that but I'm glad they did because it feels like the right time. We hadn't really been watching anything on cable for the past several weeks except for having shows on in the background like Futurama reruns or whatever. I liked having that but it's so not worth $30+/month. When we do have time to watch TV again we'll go to Amazon Prime streaming and the various networks apps, and if we run out of content there maybe we'll get Netflix for $11/month.

Posted the character profile of Kirsten Thomas (from Case Closed). In a couple updates recently I mentioned adding some topless photos to some hentai profiles so that the adult content warning disclaimer would show up, thus preventing Adsense ads from displaying. I noticed that shortly after those two updates the number of visitors increased. Coincidence? Or does it mean that I should be adding more hentai profiles? Let me know what you think.

I finished watching Little Witch Academia the last time I was donating platelets at the blood center and really enjoyed it so I'd like to get a profile done for that soon. I then started watching The Devil is a Part Timer but wasn't even able to get halfway through the episode when it was time to go. It had an interesting premise so I'll be looking forward to continuing with that next time.

I received another Google Adsense notice about a page containing sexual content, Endless Serenade. The anime is a sexually explicit hentai but the page itself contained nothing sexual, not even a provocative image. I added a couple of screenshots showing topless nude women so that adding an adult content warning to the page wouldn't seem confusing, just like I did last time for Ogenki Clinic Adventures because any page that has the adult content warning is set to automatically not show any Google Adsense ads. And while I was doing that I also added more information to that profile... so thanks for being weird, Google.

Thursday, June 21, 2018

I received a notice from Google Adsense that one of the pages, Ogenki Clinic Adventures, contained sexual content which was a violation of their policies. While that page is about an anime that contains sexual content, the page itself did not contain any sexual content, but it's pretty much pointless to argue with gargantuan Google so I removed AdSense ads on that page and added the standard adult content warning. Since it would have been weird to add the warning to a page without any adult content, I also added a couple of images showing a few of the female characters topless.

Updated the backend coding of several pages. The Add Anime and Add Character pages each had two separate pages, one for the form and one after the form was submitted, which is a silly way to do it but I coded up those pages a long time ago when I was just learning about PHP and form submissions and didn't know any better. So I finally got around to merging them each into a single page and then broke apart the PHP from the HTML with templates. I also made it so that if you submit one of the forms and there is an error you will still see the form and it will still be filled in with everything you already entered. I also converted some other pages to use templates: FAQ page, Feedback page, Contact page, Anime News page. I added anime images to the FAQ page, Anime News page, and Archived Updates.

Updated the JavaScript on the File Explorer page so that when a link is clicked on it will be registered as having been visited. This wasn't happening before because the page content was being loaded via AJAX instead of the browser actually going to the page. Fixed a minor bug in my image thumbnail generation code which affected images that were in a different folder than the page displaying them. Updated the animated GIF images on the homepage, replacing one with a new image and replacing the other two with larger versions. Updated pages to allow for the File Explorer sidebar width.

Monday, May 21, 2018

Posted the anime profile of Assassination Classroom and the character profile of Nagisa Shiota (from Assassination Classroom). Improved my image thumbnail generation code by having it preserve transparency when creating thumbnails of images that contain transparent areas. Removed the thumbnail from the 404 Not Found to just let the browser scale down the full size image, because I had generated that thumbnail manually many, many years ago and nowadays browsers do a better job than I had done with it. I got rid of the multiple 404 pages which would redirect various places based on whatever, so now there's just a single 404 page which handles everything, and I moved the HTML part of that page into a template.

Sunday, May 20, 2018

Updated the File Explorer sidebar so that it remembers what file arrangement order was selected, and removed the link to switch arrangement orders if there is only a single time of file in the selected directory (since there's no point in switching between arranging by type or name if there's only a single type).

Saturday, May 19, 2018

Updated the Javascript and AJAX files for the homepage and made it work and display properly when viewed from the File Explorer page. Removed Infolinks, those slightly annoying green advertising links that get automatically populated throughout the content. Moved the Google Analytics, Facebook, and Pinterest Javascript code from the bottom of the template file into the main JavaScript file that gets loaded at the bottom of the template file. Fixed a bug that prevented the animated gif images from animating on the homepage.

Friday, May 18, 2018

Replaced the list of social media share buttons with one social media sharing icon that will show the other buttons when clicked. It think this gives a cleaner look. I didn't hide the Facebook LIKE button because it's about liking, not sharing. I moved the HTML content out of the Configure Preferences file and into a template file and merged the separate CSS and JavaScript I had for it into the main CSS and JavaScript files. I removed Google Adsense ads from the File Explorer page as pages with adult content could be loaded there and Adsense isn't allowed on pages with adult content.

Thursday, May 17, 2018

Updated the character profiles of Grell Sutcliffe and William T. Spears (from Black Butler). Made some cosmetic fixes to the mobile version of the site. Moved my phpBB 3.0 MODs page from the about folder to the phpBB extensions folder and updated the backend code for both of those pages to use template files instead of generating the HTML from within the page scripts.

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

Posted the character profile of Ronald Knox (from Black Butler). Renamed the "admin" to "about" since it primarily contains pages that tell about the site and myself and doesn't contain any admin controls or anything.

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

I removed the H1 HTML element from the website title so I could use it for the title area of the first section on the page, as that title is more important to focus on than the title of the website. For the image popup box I moved the image title from above the image to below the image so that long titles that wrap will not get cut off by the image. I also tweaked the style of the buttons for closing the box and for opening the image in a new window so that they're a bit wider and flow into the top and sides of the box instead of just the top, and made it so that the box doesn't auto-close when clicking the button to view the image in a new window. Updated from Jquery 2.2.4 to Jquery 3.3.1, and performed other minor tweaks and fixes.

One bug I fixed would prevent the file list sidebar from remembering which leaves had been opened. I changed the cookies that store file list sidebar statuses into a session cookie so it should be cleared when the browser is closed, that way the sidebar only stays open for the current session. I made a minor improvement to the filename sorting and made the bottom file list section flash when it loads after clicking a link in the upper folder list section, just to draw attention to it. I did this because I found myself clicking a link in the folder list section and then just waiting, not realizing that the content loaded in the bottom file list section because it looked so similar to the previous file list.

The biggest change came behind-the-scenes as I'm now using PHP to build thumbnail images instead of having my pre-processor script build them. The image galleries were already using PHP to build thumbnails and that had been working well so made the switch for all other images. Let me know if you notice any bugs with this such as certain images not being displayed.

Posted the character profile of Ichigo Amano (from Yumeiro Patissiere). Added an announcement to the page header asking for more anime and character profile submissions since I only have a few left to do before I run out.

I hid the controls on the popup image box until the mouse is moved over the image. I think this makes for a cleaner look.

Anyone remember HTML Frames? Not IFrames which are used to embed content into a page, but the old Frames that divided the page into separate independent sections? Well up until today I was actually still using those on Absolute Anime to display a sidebar of directories and files. But no more! I finally got around to converting that file list sidebar into an fixed DIV that is loaded via AJAX and controlled via Javascript and cookies. It can be accessed by clicking the folder icon off to the side of the browser and won't load the content until it's opened so it shouldn't slow down your normal browsing. As always, if you notice any issues with it please let me know.

Implemented a new script for processing and displaying all the updates pages. This script reads and processes the data files on the fly. Prior to this I had a local script that built the pages prior to uploading to the web server. Processing data files on the fly means that multiple files can be processed and displayed on the same page, so an entire year of updates can be displayed even if those updates are spread across multiple files. This is one more step in my efforts to get all pages to be built on the fly so I can get rid of the pre-processing scripts I currently use to build most pages. The new updates page also has an nicer, simpler URL: https://www.absoluteanime.com/updates. While I was working on that script I also fixed some HTML errors and some incorrectly displayed UTF-8 characters.

I put a new serpentine belt in my car yesterday. I didn't have the correct tool I needed, a 19mm torque socket wrench, but thanks to Nextdoor.com I found a nearby neighbor who let me borrow one. This was my first time changing a serpentine belt and it went a lot easier than I was expecting, taking less than half an hour. Once I was done I started up my car and there was no more squealing!

Back in August I made an update to the website which allowed pages to be accessed without having the file extension on the end. That seemed to work well, so today I made an update to automatically remove the file extensions when possible. Hopefully this will give URLs a little cleaner look.

Our local Kmart and Sears stores are both closing, which is kind of sad. They weren't the best stores in the world... or in the town... but I enjoyed getting free and heavily discounted stuff with the Shop Your Way program. I would usually play their sweeps games in the evening while watching TV and end up with about $10-$15 every couple weeks, enough to purchase various household necessities. Sometimes they would offer Surprise Points, which they now call Free Cash, that would get me other stuff for free or very cheap. The program wasn't that great and often had restrictions that weren't listed, but it was still nice to get free toilet paper or dish soap or whatever. Twice I even ended up really winning the sweepstakes! The first time I won some exercise equipment like a weight set, mini trampoline, jump rope, kettle bells, an exercise watch, and probably some other things I can't think of. I kept and used some of the things, gave others away, and sold the rest.

The other sweepstakes I won was called the SHC ONLY: FOR THE HOLIDAYS and the prize for that was a $100 in points... except that they never gave me the points and I assume none of the other 4 winners got theirs either. When checking the status of the sweeps it used to say that it was pending as they were contacting the winners, but then it changed to "We didn't get enough completed entries into this Sweepstakes within the time allotted, therefore a winner will not be chosen". The official rules don't mention anything about a minimum number of entries so I call shenanigans! The Shop Your Way (info@shopyourway.com) people said I needed to contact sweeps@searshc.com, so I did. Many, many times. But I never received a response and info@shopyourway.com had no other contact information and wouldn't do anything to help. So that was frustrating and disappointing... kind of like the closing of these stores.

I got back from Vallejo on Sunday after three weeks away. I enjoyed my stay, getting to visit with my grandparents a lot and finally getting to work on some phpBB 3.2 extensions that I hadn't had the time to work on before. It still felt good to be home, though. Unfortunately it now feels like I'm starting to get sick :( as I have a persistent headache, constant chills, and my muscles ache for no reason. I'm really hoping it doesn't get too bad....

The screen back plate for my laptop arrived last Wednesday so I was finally able to get that put back together. I then started preparing to do a fresh Windows reinstall on my main PC because it has been acting up lately. First I had to figure out how to get all of my different development environments set up on my laptop like they were set up on my PC so that after the reinstall I would know how to do it, and in case something went very wrong with my PC I would still have my development environments set up and available. Certain programs had to be installed in a certain order with specific SDK versions and environment variables had to be set and updated at specific points. It was a huge pain but I got it done and documented the entire process so I could replicate it once I finished reinstalling Windows. The Windows reinstall took quite a while with all the backing up and install and updates and reinstalling all my programs, but it went pretty smooth and my PC is up and running again and seems to be working well.

Posted the anime profile of Pokemon DP Galactic Battles and the article Can We Expect an eSports Anime in 2018?. Merged two profiles together since it turns out I had accidentally created two profiles of Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne a while back.

The noticeable lack of updates for the past few weeks is due to a few reasons, one of which is that my laptop is currently disassembled and will remain that way until the new back cover arrives. I put in a new power port the other day since the one that was in there was very loose and the power cord would constantly slip out, but until the back panel arrives which the screen attaches to I can't put it back together.
