Fixed a problem in the forum where the birthdate fields would be lost upon registration, thus requiring the user to input it again once they logged in for the first time. Changed the feedback page so that there is no longer an intermediate page between the initial feedback page and the actual page with the contact form.

Implemented new pop-up information bubbles. These new pop-up bubbles can handle more text than the previous ones, plus HTML like bold, italics, and even links. Also, they can be made to stay open while the mouse cursor is over them so that you can do things such as select text and click on links.

Whelp, yesterday morning was the end of my 10-day Amoxicillin & Clavulanate antibiotic treatment. They worked great at clearing up whatever it was that I had. Of course, they also worked great at keeping me nearby a toilet at all time. I seriously hope none of you have to go through that! After reading the side effects, I now know that they are also the reason I had little energy. But all that's finally over with, and I'm back to my normal, cheery self.

Oh, and I found out yesterday that my chiropractic visits have been seriously paying off, so now rather than going twice a week I only have to go once every two weeks! W00t! Yes, I visit a chiropractor. Bad poster in high school followed by years of slumping over a computer literally got me bent out of shape. So let this be a lesson to all you young whippersnappers out there... DON'T SLOUCH! You don't want to have to go through this torture later in life; not to mention it ain't cheap! You'll need a lot of talent or a lot of luck to find a job that has good enough insurance to cover the cost.

Posted my review of Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End (Two-Disc Collector's Edition).

As you may or may not be aware, three weeks ago I fell sick. Towards the end of that first week, I felt much better, except for a nagging sore throat and cough. Unfortunately, that was but a calm before another store. When Saturday rolled around, I again fell to sickness, as all my previous symptoms returned with a vengeance. After another week of suffering, I once again began to feel my old self emerging. My symptoms all still remained, they were just not as potent. In fact, I was even able to go see The Mist in the theater with my wife and her mother, who was visiting for the weekend. I only had two cough drops on me, so thankfully I only came close to coughing fits twice in the theater. Had a third reared its ugly head, I would have had to excuse myself and miss a bunch of people going crazy in a supermarket.

Anyway, so this past Saturday marked week three. Despite having consistently been taking vitamin C, I still had a little congestion, a minor cough, and a sore throat. By now it was obvious what I had was bacterial, not viral, so I headed to the medical clinic where I got me some antibiotics. Lucky me, now I look forward to ten days of killing all bacteria inside me, good and bad. Definitely something I would have liked to avoid, but I guess sometimes you just aren't given much of a choice. But hopefully now I'll start feeling better so I can get my butt back in the computer chair and start updating the website.

If you've visited Absolute Anime recently, you'll notice that every update in November has been some DVD review. Since I was sick, I spent a lot of time cuddled up vegging on TV. Thank you, SpongeBob, for making it just a bit more bearable! Taking care of emails and adding new profiles can be a headache, so I avoided those tasks. But that's not the only reason for my lack of updates this month. I've also been working on creating a new, redesigned website for my dad's non-profit group called the McCune Committee. Currently, it's just located in a subdirectory on Absolute Anime called McCuneCollection.org.

It's a simple design, as is pretty much any site I layout. The original site was a single page, so my dad and I have put in a lot of effort this month building it up into something that can really showcase the McCune Collection. I also put in the effort to make it valid XHTML1.0, which was quite a pain. So far the only page that doesn't validate is the one where I use an Iframe to display a Google map, since Iframe tags aren't allowed. The Object tags are supposed to be used in their place, but of course that doesn't work with Internet Explorer. I could use JavaScript to put the Iframe in place, but really, that's retarded; validation just isn't that important.

Damn it all! On Saturday I fell sick. It came on all of a sudden, out of nowhere, starting with dry mouth and then by evening I had a sore throat, my head was spinning, I was hot AND cold at the same time, and apparently had a high fever. It totally sucked, and I couldn't even concentrate enough to watch TV! Luckily, the fever broke that night, but unfortunately I still feel like crap. Now I'm congested in the head and chest, making it hard to breathe or talk, and still have a sore throat, making it hard to eat or cough. And therefore, I'm going to bed now. Goodnight!

Added an image gallery of yours truly and an image gallery of my lovely wife, Latrice.

I haven't done a whole lot of updating with the website this month, but I've got a good excuse... vacation! Yep, my wife and I went with my parents to Kauaii, Hawaii. Although we were on vacation for almost two weeks, only about 7 days of that were in Hawaii. We drove down to my parents on the 7th, then spent most of the next day just getting to the island. From the 9th to the 15th we enjoyed what the island had to offer, and then headed for home on the 16th. Once back in the continental US, we stayed at my parent's house house a couple days, until we finally decided to head for home sweet home on the 18th. And there we just relaxed, leaving the house only to do some much needed grocery shopping, until Monday finally rolled around on the 22nd.

Ah, but that's not the only thing that kept me busy this month! On Wednesday, Victor and I headed down to San Francisco for a little party being held that evening. We left pretty early, about 9:15 in the morning, as we had to make a detour around Sacramento to drop off a few pinball machines, and then we wanted to arrive at The City by the Bay before 3:00 so we could catch A Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney Digital 3D. Unfortunately, dropping off the pinball machines took longer than expected, so we missed it by about 30-45 minutes.

Then on Friday, I went through all 787 photographs that we took in Hawaii and posted a select 28 of them in our 2007 Hawaiian vacation Image Gallery. I did the same with the trip to San Francisco, though I had significantly fewer photos to work through for that 2007 Day Trip to San Francisco Image Gallery. Also on Friday, I did a deep cleaning in the living room, including getting all the dust off the ceiling fan and off of the action figures on the mantel place. So that chewed up pretty much all day. And today I added an image gallery of yours truly and an image gallery of my lovely wife, Latrice.

So here we are now, three days until Halloween, which also happens to by our 6th wedding anniversary. According to Wikipedia, a traditional gift to give for a 6th wedding anniversary in America is Iron... which I guess could be cool if it was... uh... what's iron used for again? Wikipedia also states that a modern 6th wedding anniversary gift is wood. And who doesn't love some wood. I can't tell you how often I used to beg my parents to buy me a piece of wood when they went shopping. In Britain, it's apparently more traditional to give sugar, which is a gift I can get behind, at least if it's already made into something delicious, 'cause I love me some sweets but baking them myself is just a drag.

Remember last week how I mentioned that my wife was told to come in for a chest x-ray so they could see if the lump on the previous x-ray was actually a tumor of some kind or just a clump of pneumonia? Well, she went on Sunday to get the x-ray. She choose Sunday specifically because that's when Dr. Lui works, and so far he is the most awesomeness doctor we have ever met. Mainly because he actually CARES! When my wife went in originally, he didn't brush her off like Dr. Usha R. Reddy (who told us that Treese absolutely positively did NOT have pneumonia), nor did he just write a prescription for antibiotics, he actually wondered WHY she gets it so often, and ordered tests to find out. Not only that, but he called our house several times to check up on her and to make an appointment with her to come in again.

So as I said, Sunday came and Treese went in to get her chest x-ray, so we could finally find out if she had a tumor or not. Unfortunately, a certain turn of events happened which prevented Dr. Lui from coming in, so Treese got another doctor. That in itself wouldn't have been so bad, except that this doctor didn't do crap. He refused to take a chest x-ray, and instead told her she needed to see a specialist. Thanks a lot, that was a $25 well spent. Hey, if I give you $100 will you tell me that I need to go to school to become a doctor? Ass. So she's gonna wait until next Sunday and go in again, but if Dr. Lui isn't there then she's won't be staying.

Thursday, September 20, 2007

Long time, no update. Things have been pretty busy around here. As I mentioned previously, my wife had contracted pneumonia again and was taking some strong antibiotics for it. When they ran out about a week ago, she went back to the doc's for a followup where they took a chest x-rays, among other things. The x-ray revealed what she had suspected, that the pneumonia was still there. But it also revealed what might be a tumor in her lung. Either that, or it was just a clump on pneumonia, they couldn't tell for sure. So they gave her some more of the strong stuff to take and told her to come back in two weeks, since if the spot on the x-ray is still there by that time then it's a tumor. So that news has kind of been preoccupying my thoughts recently.

Also, I had jury duty back on September 11. Checking in after 5:00 the evening before informed me that I had a stay of execution, but checking in the next day said I had to be at the courthouse at 8:00 in the frillin' morning. When the time I was somehow able to get myself out of bed and down to the courthouse. Dude at the metal detector made me take off the super-small pocket knife I have attached to my key-chain (like you'd be able to even accidentally hurt somebody with that thing?), so I had to go run that out to my car for safe keeping. Once inside, we all piled into a good-sized room and I played Viewtiful Joe on Nintendo DS until they put on some jury orientation video. After that propaganda snooze-fest, they called a bunch of names at random. Those people all left for a courtroom or something, while the rest of us were told that we could go home. It was truly the easies jury duty I've ever done.

Then my aunt and uncle came to visit towards the beginning of the month. The had been in Washington for a little trip and were headed back to Vallejo. They got here a couple hours before my wife got off work, so we just chatted until she got home, then headed out to Logan's Roadhouse. This was the day before she was to get her new braces, so it worked out great since she was determined to get a steak before her braces went on. I was seriously disappointed in their kettle chips. They were so plain and bland! No flavor at all! Apparently they're made fresh, but what does that matter if they don't have any taste?

The next day my wife went in to get her braces. Unfortunately (or fortunately, as it would turn out) she arrived two hours late because they moved her appointed up by 2 hours... and without even asking her if that was okay! They had called the day before to confirm her appointment, and they told me the appointment time then, but I didn't know what time her original appointment was and they didn't tell me they had changed it. They just called to remind her of her appointment tomorrow at whatever time, and that was it. And the next morning when she didn't show up at the new appointment time, they didn't even bother to call. It's not like they were busy or anything. All they were doing was waiting for her. And yet, they didn't call. When my wife asked them why, they had no response. But turns out being late was a good thing, because they only had time to put on her top braces, which, after having them for a day, she was very happy about.

It might seem to some of you that I have been neglecting my website recently, as the month is already half over and aside from a few DVD reviews I haven't really posted anything. No, I'm not giving up, I've just been busy with on other things in life. First up, my wife is sick with pneumonia. As I mentioned previously, we went to a walk-in clinic at the beginning of the month and after waiting for several hours we got no help at all. That was on a Thursday, so on Sunday we decided to try our luck again, but this time at a different clinic, one called Crossroads. From the moment we pulled up in the parking center we had a good feeling about the place. Unlike the other one which looked like a run-down center for people who want to get sick and die, this looked clean and professional. I know you can't always judge a book by it's cover, but it gave us hope.

We didn't have to wait very long, only like 30 minutes or so, and we were headed into one of the rooms, which also looked pristine. One of the nurses there knew one of Treese's friends from RABA, so that chatted while he did all the standard tests and took all the standard measurements. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Lui entered. He was a very nice man who listened to everything we said. He ordered some chest x-rays and various blood tests, saying that he did believe it was pneumonia and that he wanted to figure out WHY she gets it every year. Yeah, wouldn't that be nice to know! So after a shot of antibiotics, a quick breathing treatment, and a prescription for antibiotic pills and an inhaler, we headed home.

She noticed improvement by the next day, and a couple days later we went back for a follow up. Although she was better than she was on Sunday, she still wasn't feeling too well. This time we got Dr. Reinhart (sp?), who was also very pleasant to deal with. Not all of the tests were in yet, but the ones that were showed she didn't have anything else they were looking for. Well, it's now just over a week-and-a-half later and she still feels like crap. We don't know if she still has the pneumonia or if it's just because of the strong antibiotics she's taking. She's supposed to have another followup this week, so we'll see what the remaining tests will show.

In addition to all that, I've been working hard on getting a new look for my site. I wanted the layout to be pretty much the same, but with a smoother style using rounded corners, softer colors, and smoother JavaScript actions. It wanted to get away from the hard rectangular edges, dark borders, and rough background textures of my current design. I had been working on since last year, but now that phpBB3 is getting close to its final release date, I figured I needed to step it up and get a new design locked down. Why? Because making all the templates for the forum is time consuming, and I didn't want to make a bunch of new forum templates with the current style and then do it all again a few months later when I finally finished the redesign.

Strangely enough, the new style for phpBB3 looked strikingly similar to the redesign I was working on. I liked some of their design choices, such as the circular icons (I was using rectangular icons with rounded corners), so I ended up borrowing some from their design. Hopefully you all will like the new look. I recoded pretty much all the JavaScript from scratch, creating such features a new side navigation bar that can be slid open or closed, and new pop-up information bubbles that can contain HTML and links and lets you select the text with your cursor. If you want, you can check out the test page and tell me what you think. I've tried in with Internet Explorer 6 & 7, Firefox 2, and Opera 9, all on Windows XP. I tried to download the WebTV Viewer but I couldn't find it. Everyone has links pointing to the same page, which was down.

But that's not all I've been up to! I've also been writing MODs for the new phpBB3 message board. Since it's so new, most of the MODs I installed for the current message board don't exist yet, and phpBB2 MODs are completely incompatible. So I've taken it upon myself to write the MODs that I wanted for my board. Here's a quick rundown of the ones I've written so far.

Of course, writing the MODs is only a part of the whole process. I want to make the available for others to use, so I have to provide installation instructions and package them according to specs. I then when I add features, fix bugs, or make other changes, I have to keep track of the changes so I can write instructions for updating. Yeah, it's a pain, but it helps out other people running phpBB3 boards so its worth it.

Man, whatta week. Treese hadn't been feeling all that hot since Monday, and by Thursday she was positive that what she had wasn't just the flu... it was pneumonia! And she should know, as she's basically gotten it every year since she had her hip replacement. The first time she was even hospitalized for over a week, and her doc thought that she wasn't going to pull through it. Weird thing is, her body doesn't display the typical symptoms of pneumonia; her lungs usually sound pretty clear and she doesn't get a constant fever. Often her temperature will be normal for the most part, with only a few hot flashes that come and go.

When Thursday came, she was hurtin' enough that we decided to head into a walk-in clinic and kick this thing in the butt before it hospitalized her again. After waiting for several hours listing to a TV blaring the whole collapsed bridge story, we finally got in to see a nurse. He was a nice guy, and Treese told him all about her symptoms and medical history as he did his tests. He seemed to understand what she was going through, and told her to make sure she told the doc all about it and the non-typical pneumonia symptoms.

So when the doc, Usha R. Reddy, entered, Treese explained everything to her... even about how one time she was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia the day after she was told by a clinic doc that she definitely didn't have pneumonia because she didn't have the typical symptoms. But, and here's the good part, because she had no fever, heard very little crackling in her lungs, and because it hurt when she pushed on an area of her back, the doc said it was definitely not pneumonia. WTF?!

She tried to explain the inflammation and pain that Treese felt whenever she took a breath as pulling a muscle. She asked if Treese worked at a physical job or did any heavy lifting... uh, nope! She tried to explain the blood in the spit as when you cough a lot a vessel can rupture and cause it... but she hasn't been coughing that much yet! A few fits now and then, but it's really not bad... yet. She said Treese should get some chest X-rays, but since the X-ray tech guy just left they couldn't do them there. So the doc sent us home with no antibiotics, saying take some Tylenol.

Oh yeah, and as we were on our way to the clinic, we got rear ended by some lady in an SUV. We were on Cypress turning right onto Churn Creek, and were stopped part way in the turn waiting for all the cars to go by when BAM! When it was clear to go, we both pulled over into the nearby bus stop area. Amazingly enough, there didn't seem to be any damage to our vehicle. We were all surprised, because it wasn't like she just tapped us. We were definitely jarred, and yet we couldn't even find a single scratch on the bumper.

We exchanged info anyway, and she seemed like a nice lady. The reason she gave was that she thought the guy behind her was going too fast and wasn't going to stop, so she slammed on her brakes and skidded into us. Not sure how that makes sense, but whatever. We were just happy there was no visible damage, and were more concerned with getting to the doc for some so-called help. Yeah, take our $25, make us wait for several hours, ignore what we say and tell us to go home. Some help. Maybe we should move to Canada, they seem to have some pretty good health care.

Oh, and I apologize for not having very many updates recently. I've been trying to get a test version of the new phpbb3 message board up and running, and of course it couldn't go smoothly. For some reason, the server seems to time out 98% of the time when trying to access the test board. I've found that the issue has something to do with the caching, as if I make the cache directory NOT writable, then the board works fine... except that whenever I go to the admin panel and change a setting, I wind up on a blank page with the setting unchanged.

To help in figuring out exactly what's going on, Gary set up a separate test server for me where I could install the board and adjust various Apache and PHP settings. So I uploaded a clean copy of phpbb3 there and... the install page wouldn't show up all the way! Yeah, the bottom of Installation Compatibility Requirements page gets cut off! Which means no buttons to push to continue the installation! After experimenting, I discovered that there is some kind of character limit, as when I added debug statements, the page wouldn't get as far, and when I removed text (such as some of the explanation paragraphs) then the page would get all the way to the bottom. It's just too weird.

My wife and I went to see Transformers yesterday morning. She absolutely loved it, and although it was better than I was expecting it to be, and can't really say I loved it. It took forever for them to get to the point where the Autobots came together and actually started talking like real characters. Until that point, the transformers were basically just props. Unfortunately, even after that point there wasn't a whole lot of conversing between Autobots, and there was pretty much none between the Decepticons through the whole movie, so I really didn't to any of them. The Transformers are supposed to be more than just giant robots that can transform and fight, they're supposed to be real characters... they're supposed to be the CENTRAL characters.

The Sunday before that was my wife's birthday, and we went to see Fantastic Four- Rise of the Silver Surfer. I had really low expectations for this one, which is probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did. Yeah, there was some pretty dumb plot stuff in there, but it kept me entertained and never got boring. And she really enjoyed it, which probably helped me enjoy it too. Afterward we had lunch at one of Treese's favorite restaurants, Red Lobster. I'm not a big fan of seafood so we don't usually go there, but she loves it, so this time I insisted we go. And she was glad I did because she thoroughly enjoyed her meal. Then after that we came and relaxed. So yeah, it was definitely a good day.

I finally made it back from Vacaville! It took two weeks to get the house in tip-top ready-to-sell shape, which was about a week longer than I was expecting. I wasn't the only one working on it, as a lot of days my dad came with me to help out, and sometimes they had some other friends over to help with various things. We all finished right as the realator was bringing some people by to take a look at it. We were leaving as they were entering, that's how close it was. So I finally headed for home the day after that, which was Saturday before last. I had never been away from Treese for that long before, not since we moved to Redding anyway, so it sure felt good to get home. I had Subway sandwiches for lunch pretty much every day I was there working on the house, so now that I'm back I do miss those.

Last Wednesday, Victor, Treese, and I went to see the midnight showing of Hot Fuzz. I wasn't real impressed with the commercials and trailers, but the actual movie turned out to be way better. Although it felt a little long, like it took too long to really get started, it was still hilarious, and had some cool actions scenes as well. It was made by the same people who did Shawn of the Dead, which was also a hilarious movie. So kinda looks like those guys really do know a little something about comedy!

This has really been a busy couple of weeks! Last month our TV up and died, so I had to start frantically searching for a new one. While I was doing that we had to use my old spare 20 inch set. So after a whole bunch of researching I finally picked one out. I couldn't find one that would go into standby when there was no incoming video signal, and come out of standby when it received a video signal. This was a feature we always used, since we have everything hooked up to an A/V receiver. But at least the set I picked out had an "Auto Power On" which, according to the manual, "Turns TV On automatically when the cable box or a connected device is turned On". Unfortunately, that option doesn't seem to work. I have devices connected via s-video and the RGB component, but the TV will not turn itself on when any of these devices are turned on.

Thankfully, I found an alternative solution called the "Smart Strip Power Strip". It is a surge protector that monitors one specific outlet on the strip called the control. When it detects that it is drawing only a minimal amount of power (meaning the device plugged into it is turned off or is in standby mode), then it turns off the power to the other outlets (except for a couple marked as always on). This way we can plug the A/V receiver into the control outlet, and when we power it on or off, the TV will respond automatically. At least that's the plan. It hasn't actually arrived yet, so we'll see.

Okay, then two weekends ago my wife's friend, Becca, dropped by. She was just passing through California on her way to Canada and wanted to say hi, yet when she got here she actually ended up staying the entire weekend. She finally resumed her trek to Canada to be with her semi-lesbian partner on Tuesday morning. And yes, I mean semi-lesbian, not bi. Her partner is a woman who is a lesbian who is legally turning herself into a man (and notice I said "legally", not "surgically"). Yeah, weird. So if you are a woman, who becomes a man, and still likes women... does that make you a lesbian? I'm not passing judgement here or anything, I'm just curious.

Alrighty, then on Tuesday afternoon my parents and grandparents arrived for a visit. While Treese was at work, we all went to Turtle Bay and walked around, checked out the garden and the sundial bridge and all that. The next day we drove up to Castle Crags state park. We hiked up the trail to see the rock formation, which wasn't all that spectacular, but still, the journey itself was fun. We then grabbed some lunch at a burger joint in the nearest town, and for dinner we all went to Logan's Roadhouse. They all left for home the next morning, but it was definitely a nice visit.

Then on Sunday I drove down to Vallejo so I could help my uncle prep his house for selling. He's in Vacaville, which is like 30 minutes from Vallejo. Basically I'm doing a whole bunch of painting. The first day was mainly the baseboards, the second and third days were mainly the door frames and window sills, and day four was mainly the walls of the master bedroom. Tomorrow will probably be finishing the bedroom and closet, then starting on the garage. It's tough work, and I've been sore every night. Hopefully we'll be finished soon, because I'm really not cut out for this whole manual labor thing.

Let's see, I should also mention that I called DirecTV again. There was a charge on our bill for a national feed of the CW network. I called and explained the whole situation, and the nice lady gave us a credit for the charge, and expedited our unresolved issue. So I spent hours on the phone with April, a technical support lady, who said it was definitely not a broadcast issue, and that the problem was probably due to our outdated satellite box (Sony SAT-B55). She offered to upgrade us the DirecTV DVR, but I declined (I already have a great DVR and I don't want to start paying additional monthly fees). She then offered to replace our box with a newer one, a DirecTV brand model D11. I declined that as well, since the D11 doesn't have a low speed data port that TiVo can use to change channels.

She gave us a 6 month credit so that we wouldn't have to pay for the national WB feed, but said that we need to get this issue resolved one way or another. We went through a lot of possibilities, but it basically boiled down to two basic options: allow them to upgrade me to a new box, or live with the issue. But the thing is, I really don't think it is the box. The box works fine for everything else, and we used to get the WB just fine on Channel 10. So there has to be something else at work here. And alas I just had someone who read my story and who works for DirecTV send me a message saying that I'm experiencing a multiswitch problem on the LNB of my dish. Now, doesn't this sound much more plausible than a freaky box that just decides to display the wrong signal on one specific channel?

Three weeks ago I was on the phone with DirecTV trying to get this whole CW/Reelz Channel thing fixed, and was told to call back if it hadn't been fixed by today. Well, it wasn't fixed, so I called back. The first lady wasn't able to fix the problem, but she did enable one of the national CW feeds so that we could at least get the channel. Then she transferred me to tech support... or what was supposed to be tech support. It ended up just being a transfer to nothing, and I got disconnected. The next lady also tried to transfer me to tech support, but I ended up being transferred to some unavailable number which told me to hang up and redial the 800 number. So I did, and somehow I was immediately connected to tech support. This lady got the guide data to correctly show the CW network instead of WB, but the actual channel still displayed the Reelz Network. So she said she'd be giving my info to the local and they would contact me as soon as possible, most likely within the next week. Seems kind of odd that nobody else in Redding has reported this.

Posted the character profile of Anko Mitarashi (from Naruto). Fixed an issue with improper filtering of the HDLoader Compatibility List for size and compatibility.

On Monday I called DirecTV again about the fact that we are still receiving the Reelz Channel instead of the CW Network on Channel 10. Some of you may remember that I called them back in October of last year, and was told that it was a known problem that they were working on. Guess what? They had no idea that this was happening. Notice I didn't say "still happening". Nope, they had no idea it was happening PERIOD! So this time the lady opened up a claim (or whatever you call it) and said they will be definitely having people looking into what's going on. I'm supposed to call back in about three weeks if the problem hasn't been corrected by then.

I drove down to Vallejo Wednesday of last week in order to attend the funeral service for my Uncle Tom. It was my first funeral experience, and it was certainly no fun. And weirdly enough, it was fun... fun to get together with family, with everyone at the same time. The service itself was very touching. When my Uncle James spoke about the great kind of guy Tom was, it was so beautiful and heartfelt that I had to really fight to hold back the tears. And when my Uncle Bill got up and told the story about when they were kids, I was for the first time able to picture my Dad and all my uncles as kids, as brothers, playing, fighting, messing around, and being there for each other.

It was a wonderful service, and afterwards most everyone went to this Italian restaurant for lunch. It was rented out just for us, and all the food was served buffet style. This is where we really got to talk and catch up. So why does it take a funeral in order to get everyone together? It saddens me greatly to think about this, as it means the next time I get to see everyone... there's going to be one more that I'll never get see or speak with again, permanently missing. And that just is not right! We should be having reunions, even if it's only once every five years. Can't somebody get that together? Hey... I'm somebody... but wait, I have no idea how to even organize a freakin' Halloween party, much less a full-on family reunion! Maybe there's a website out there that could teach me....

The week before I was to leave for Vallejo, we had our water heater bust and Treese's rocker/recliner break. The pool of water under the water heater clued us in that there was some kind of problem going on with it. At first it appeared to be just a leaky drain valve, so I bought and attached a brass cap, which stopped the leak, and then I cleaned up the mess and kept an eye on it for the next couple days. But two days later there was still water leaking from somewhere, so the plumber came out the day before I needed to leave town and told me what I suspected... it had rusted through and we needed a new one. Luckily, our house insurance covers that! He had a new one delivered within an hour, and got everything hooked up nice and proper.

And now about Treese's rocker... apparently the part of the chair underneath the seat area dislodged somehow and got stuck in the metal area that extends the foot rest. We called Kuebler's Furniture and they set up a service ticket for us no sweat, no charge. They said the dude who does the repairs would call me soon to come over. Unfortunately, he didn't, as it turns out it was a very busy time for him as well. So the morning that I had to leave town I called them to say that I wouldn't be home for the rest of the week so don't bother calling until the following Monday. But instead of getting to say all that, the dude, upon learning that I would be leaving town, said he'd come over before I had to leave to take a look at the chair. You don't see service like that much anymore! And yep, he showed up, looked at the chair, and took it with him so that he could fix it. We just got it back on Tuesday, good as new. Treese was sure happy to have it back, and I would just like to thank the good people at Kuebler's Furniture for their excellent service.

Happy belated holidays! I hope everyone got to have at least some kind of vacation and start out the new year on a positive note. My wife and I flew to Colorado along with my parents to visit my sister for Christmas, and that was a blast. I'm looking forward to writing all about the trip, but then I still have to write about our Christmas vacation from the year before. Damn, has it really been that long already? Things have just been so busy lately.

Tonight I got a call from my mom saying that my Uncle Tom passed away yesterday. Definitely not a fun phone call to receive. He had cancer, but the thing is... he was actually getting way better and was going to be returning to work. The future was looking brighter than it had been in a while, then apparently a nasty little blood clot turned things around real fast. And to think, Treese had one of those deadly little bastards. Her's went to her lung and brought on the pneumonia that nearly killed her. Even her doc didn't think she'd be making it out of the hospital alive, but by some miracle she was able to escape the grim reaper's frosty grasp.

This past month I've picked up the pace on putting things up for sale with eBay and Craig's List. I wouldn't exactly call it fun, but I'm glad to get the money, and more importantly to get this stuff out of the house. The things that I'm really sad to see go are all my old videogames and videogame system. Even sitting on a shelf, they still all hold a lot of positive memories inside their plastic goodliness. But I know I'm never going to play them again, and don't think they're going to go up in value, at least not enough for them to be worth hanging on to (though I was surprised to see that some of the Super Nintendo games have held their value or even went up a little bit). But my ultimate goal is to get rid of everything that we don't use, so if I can get rid of those than I can get rid of anything.
