Posted the anime profile of Afro Samurai: Resurrection. Started adding some embedded videos to various anime profiles. Thought it might be useful, seeing is how animation is a rather large part of anime. Ideally, I'd like these videos to be trailers for the show, but it's not always possible to find trailers so I've also tried opening animations and the first 1/3 of the first episode. Hopefully I'll get some feedback on which is preferred.

Went to see the midnight showing of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, though this time we went with one of Treese's friends. We got there maybe 15 minutes before showtime and already had our tickets, but still the theater was pretty crowded so we ended up in the second row from the front. In some theaters this doesn't make much of a difference because they're smart enough to put the front seats far enough away from the screen, but this was not the case for our theater. Thus, it quite difficult to get a good feel for what was going on in the fast-moving action scenes and anything that was zoomed in too much. And yet, we all still enjoyed it. I'm really looking forward to seeing it on DVD.

I woke up this morning to find our TV stations were, for the third time this month, once again nothing but a blank, gray screen. By now I know the drill, a not-so-quick reboot of the TiVo HD. So what am I supposed to do here? Call TiVo? This is already a replacement for the previous TiVo HD which had problems. And I know they're just going to blame the cable card. Call Charter? This cable card is already a replacement card for the one that originally didn't seem to work correctly. It's not like this is an unknown issue... or even a new issue. I have seen a few threads about it on the TiVo Community forums, the latest of which is New TiVo HD losing all channels since V11- getting gray screen on cablecard.

Although our internet connection hasn't gone down again since last Saturday, today I've been getting a whole lot of this message when clicking on hyperlinks:

Connection Interrupted

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please retry

What the hell is going on over there, Comcast? Could you get your act together, please?

And while I'm on the subject of crappy service, let me just say that Tracfone SUCKS! If you're a frequent reader of my ramblings, then you may remember how Tracfone literally stole our minutes from us and replaced a known defective phone with another known defective phone of the exact same model. So pretty much, the phone was useless. Well, time has passed, and my wife decided to pick up a new cellphone as a Christmas gift to herself....

She got the TracFone LG 600 Pay-as-You-Go Cell Phone - TFLG600GP4. Now, the phone itself seems nice enough, having a good screen and all the little features one would expect nowadays. So the problem? Well, it only seems to receive calls about 10% of the time. The rest of the time it just goes to voice mail. Looking at the phone, it says we have four bars, so WTF is going on?! Oh wait, now it says two bars. Hold on... now four. And now zero. Whoops, back to four....

So it's completely unreliable in the house, which is crap, but at the very least she'll have a phone she can use to call me when she's out of the house. In fact, she called me just this afternoon. When she did, I asked if she had me on speakerphone, because the sound quality was so terrible. But nope, wasn't on speakerphone. Apparently all that distortion which makes the person's voice sound like electronic static is just a normal part of the phone. Or the service. I'm not sure which. My vote is for both. Isn't there any better cellphone companies out there that don't require a monthly service?

Anyway, despite any of that, I'm still happy, because today I got Rock Band 2 Special Edition! Yep, the one with the game, the guitar, the drums, and the microphone. Holy crap is that game fun! I still have yet to venture past the normal difficulty, though I did try the Freakin' Hard guitar tutorial. And yeah, it was freakin' hard! But I'm looking forward to honing my skills....

Today my wife and I started in on a couple of co-op games, Kameo and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Marvel Ultimate Alliance we've already played on the PS2, but we're still enjoying it, and it looks much better on the 360. She's also been trying out a bunch of those online Yahoo games, though today our Internet connected kept going down. And actually, it's down right now as I'm typing this. And it's gotta be something on their end because we haven't changed anything. I look at the front of the modem, and the Internet light is off, the US is on, and the DS is blinking. According to the modem manual, "If the US and DS LEDs are flashing, the modem is still operating, but your Internet service has been disabled by your Internet Service Provider". So much for the great and wonderful Charter cable Internet.

Posted my review of The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (Special Edition).

Woo-hoo, 2009 is here! And what better way is there to start off the new year than with a reboot of TiVo. For some reason, all channels below 80 would show up as nothing more than a gray screen, though a quick check revealed that this only happened on the TiVo HD which uses cable cards. Thankfully, a quick reboot fixed the problem.

New Years Eve was fun. Our original plans included joining in on a party at the bowling alley, but when my wife went to work that day, she learned that her team's offices were being moved to their new location... a move that wasn't supposed to happen for another week. Anyone who has ever moved an entire office can attest that doing so is hard, tiring work. So by the time she got home, a party was out of the question.

So instead we ended up going over to her friend's place to hang out. It was just the three of us since both of her roommates had to work that evening. We played a little Guitar Hero, followed by Mario Cart, and then Zelda. That was my first time playing Guitar Hero, and I definitely see the attraction. That game is a blast! Mario Cart was fun too, though it took some time getting used to using the Wii steering wheel controller.

Zelda, on the other hand, was a complete disappointment. That game was sooo boring. True, it's probably because we were never able to get to a part where we could actually fight bad guys, but whose fault is that? The player's? Remember in the NES and SNES games when the first thing you did was fight bad guys? Yeah, what happened to that? Why do I have to start off by knocking down a bee hive, then wander around forever until discovering I have to climb a tree and jump over on the tops of other trees to reach a patch of weeds that I pick up and play music to summon a bird that sweeps down and steals a baby basket from a lunatic monkey jumping up and down on a rock in the middle of a small lake. WTF?!

But I get to fight monsters after that, right? Nooooooo! Now I have to go fishing and spend half an hour trying wiggling the controller up and down waiting for a bite so that I can get a fish so that I can feed it to a cat so that the cat will be happy so that the cat will return to it's owner so that it's owner will stop moping and actually sell me some crap that I'm required to have in order to move on. Again, I say WTF?!

So now I get to fight monsters? Nope, now I have to meet up with some brats and practice using the slingshot on some inanimate targets. Then one of them indicates that I gotta find someone's dad, or an item that his dad has or something. I talked to every person in the areas I had access to and didn't find anything, so I just said the hell with it and gave up. This whole thing took at least a couple hours and just made me hate the game.

For Christmas, we went and visited my family, which was nice. I gave my wife a set of Tinkerbell hand towels, an Optimus Prime Mr. Potato Head, a copy of Lego Star Wars - The Complete Saga for XBox 360, and a necklace with a kind of snake-like pendant that is white gold with a sapphire. She got me a nice Rogue Dreadnought Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Natural.

There's a first time for everything, and this morning was the first time that I ever found a dead raccoon laying in our backyard. Not something you see too often around here. And that sucker had some teeth! I called Haven Human Society animal control and they sent someone by to pick it up. I suppose I could have just dumped it in the trash, but then it'd be decomposing in the can for another five days... not a pleasant thought.

Last week I sent an e-mail to Red Lobster about some extremely bland Honey BBQ sauce that came with my dinner (you can read about that on our 2009 Reno Valentine's Day Weekend Vacation page). I wasn't expecting anything to come of it other than perhaps a reply saying "yes, it's supposed to have a very subtle flavor" or "no, the cook must have prepared it incorrectly", but today I received a letter in the mail from their Senior Guest Relations Representative, and included with the letter was $15 worth of certificates. So when Treese got home, we decided to go to dinner there.

I'm not a big seafood fan, so my choices at Red Lobster are kind of limited. I wanted to see if the Honey BBQ sauce tasted the same as before, so I asked our waitress for a sample, along with a sample of the Maple Cherry sauce that came on another chicken dish. I was happy to find the Honey BBQ did actually stimulate my palette, though it still wasn't nearly as good as the Honey BBQ we mix together at home. The Maple Cherry wasn't bad either, but tasted more like something for a dessert than a dinner. The downside of this meal was that it took forever to get our food (people who arrived after us received their dinners before we did), Treese's was overcooked, and my rice pilaf was cold. Yeah, I could have sent it back, but I hadn't eaten lunch and was damn hungry!

After years of not having glasses thanks to the Lasik eye surgery, I'm finally getting another pair. I noticed my vision getting slightly blurry, and when I had my eye exam on Wednesday the doc confirmed it. Though it's not bad enough to actually necessate the use of corrective lenses, insurance is covering the entire thing so might as well. Of course, to have it cost absolutely nothing out of my pocket I was limited to about two frames... okay, not about, it was exactly two frames. Why are those things so expensive?

Shortly after I awoke Monday morning the power decided that it didn't feel like hanging around, so it took a few hours off. Not sure exactly was, as the weather wasn't all that bad. It was raining slightly, but no lightning and the winds didn't seem that strong. But then last night we had a MAJOR thunderstorm! Lightening flashed and thunder cracked while rain slammed down harder than Thor's hammer. The thunder was so loud that it felt like it was shaking our entire house. Power stayed on, though, so that was nice. Today the weather was a mix of sun and rain. No power issues, but once again our Comcast Internet was acting up. It didn't go out completely, but it would keep doing that reset connection thing so I had to keep hitting "retry" for almost every page load.

And since I'm on the subject of Comcast, I have to say that our NBC high-def channel has these constant, really annoying audio glitches where the sound will pop or click or drop for a fraction of a second. It is SO annoying! I wish I could test out the OTA channel to see if it was Comcast or NBC, but unfortunately we can't receive that channel with our antenna. The picture also has glitches, where little tiny boxes will pop up once in a while, but those I can live with. It's the constant audio popping that's driving me crazy. Makes it hard to enjoy the fine quality NBC programming like Knight Rider... LOL, I couldn't even type that with a straight face!

Our six month period for the cable discounts ended today, so I called Charter up and got them reduced back to almost what they were before. Kinda annoying that this has to be done every six months, but at least it's easy.

On Thursday I drove down to my parents because the next morning the AT&T people were supposed to come to install this new fiberoptic TV, Internet, and phone bundle called AT&T U-Verse. So morning came and not fifteen minutes after the guy arrived he said that he couldn't install it until a box in the back of our house was upgraded, but he couldn't do that because he was only the inside guy so he called in a support ticket for the outside guys to come. He said, several times, that they arrive within two to twenty four hours. Flash forward to the next day, Saturday morning, twenty four hours later, and I'm sure you know the story. Nothing happened. No guys came, no phone call nothing.

We called to find out what was going on, and the lady on the phone said that the guy at our house was wrong and that the guys needed to do something at the street, not the house, and would probably be out Monday or Tuesday. Well, I couldn't exactly wait around that long, so I head back home that afternoon. I just talked with my dad today, and he said that they have now been told that both people were wrong, that nothing needed to be done on the outside or the house or the street, that everything was fine and they wanted to set up an appointment to do the installation.

So... what is anybody supposed to do in this situation? Would you really do business with a company that is constantly wrong and gives you the runaround? Yes, constantly. My parents were already thinking of ditching AT&T because of the horrible customer service they receive, and then this deal came along that would apparently save some money. But at what cost? I did read their packet, and it did sound like a great setup, but is worth it when you have zero faith in the company, knowing that if any problem should arrive that you'll be screwed.

On a lighter note, Friday evening I went with my parents to help out at a fund-raising auction for the Human Society. That was interesting. For the first couple hours, most of us stood around the tables to answer questions (as if we had any answers) and try to make sure people were playing fair. You mean people would cheat at a fund-raising auction? Uh, yes. Yes they would. People would cross out the last bid on the list or hide the list inside a pot, stuff like that. Anyway, so it was a lot of standing around until the auction finally closed, then it was time to help people pick up their items, after they paid for them of course.

Me and one other guy got to where a tall rainbow-colored Cat-in-the-Hat style hat. The original purpose is so that people could see which table was being closed at the time, but then the auctioneer guy just closed all tables at once, so that concept plan out the window. But the hat helped people see me if they needed help, and plus it was pretty chilly with all the doors being opened, so it helped keep my noggin warm. I helped people find the items they won, and helped carry the heavier ones out to their car. I even got hit on by a rather attractive woman while I was waiting for one of the guys to go get his car and pull it up to the entrance. That was quite the interesting experience, and helped put me in a good mood, not that I wasn't in a good mood already, but still, it was kinda cool.

Posted the character profile of Isley (from Claymore). I apologize for the lack of updates recently. Working on the admin control panel for my new commenting system has kept me pretty busy, but I happy to find that the system has been working well. There are still a few more things I want to do with the admin area, and I would also like to integrate the forum user accounts, but overall I am very happy with it.

Have you seen the new Star Trek movie yet? Normally we would have done the midnight showing on opening night, but lucky for us they actually did a 7PM showing, so we went to that one. And we were surprised about how uncrowded it was. Not that the theater was empty or anything, but had we entered when the previews started rather than an hour before hand, we still would have been able to get good seats. I guess that time slot wasn't too well known, because after the film was over and we exited the theater we saw the expected long lines for the midnight showing. So that in itself made it a good night. And the movie? Well, that made it a great night, because it was fantastic. I actually think we'll probably go see it again before it leaves theaters, and am seriously looking forward to the sequel. Next up on the list of movies to catch in the theater is Terminator Salvation... so this weekend we decided to refresh our memories and watch the first three Terminator films. The first is still my favorite, but they are all enjoyable movies. Let's hope the new one continues with that.

Posted my review of X-Men Volumes 1 & 2. Implemented a new commenting system, which I'm currently testing on the review pages. I've spent pretty much all of the last two weeks working on it, which is why there has been a lull in updates. If it works out, I hope to expand it to most of the other pages on the site.

Last night we finally made it out to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine. We were originally going to see the midnight showing, but then pushed it back to Saturday morning, which became Saturday night, which morphed into Sunday morning... yeah, we didn't really have a whole lot of motivation this weekend for some reason. I went in with low expectations due to all the negative reviews, and that really helped out. There were definitely some plot issues, and a whole lot of suspension of reality, but it was still fun.

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I went out to see a Pink Floyd laser show with one of her friends, who was a big Pink Floyd fan. I'd have to say that I am not really a fan, but was hoping to enjoy it anyway. Unfortunately, all four of us found it extremely boring. There were a few laser effects that were pretty neat and a few good songs, but mostly it was like watching a screen saver for several hours while listening some very long and dull songs. The best part was the intermission, where they started playing AC/DC, Depeche Mode, and other more enjoyable music. Even Treese's friend asked during the intermission if we wanted to leave. Sorry, I know it may be boring, but we dropped money on these tickets, so we're staying 'till the bitter end!

Mailed out my TR-205 "request for trial by written declaration" form today. On Friday I received a citation in the mail for failing to stop completely at a red light for a right hand turn. It was one of those damned red light cameras that apparently caught it on tape... and I say apparently because I still have not been able to log in and watch the video for myself even after precisely following the instructions for doing so. But at this point it doesn't matter, because the picture of the driver that was on the citation is definitely not me. There was a little form included with the citation which allows me to identify the driver in order to dismiss my citation... but what it doesn't state is that I am under no legal obligation to make any attempt to identify the driver of the vehicle. Hey, if you want me to do your work for you, then you damn well better start paying me for it! The police really like it when you don't know your rights, which seems really sad to me.

On Monday I drove down to Vallejo to help my sister get ready for a seriously needed garage sale. I would've liked to have stayed longer, but I had to get back by Tuesday evening as my wife and I already had tickets to the midnight showing of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Speaking of which, my wife and I went to see the midnight showing of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on Tuesday night, and surprise surprise, I actually enjoyed it. The story was silly and filled with plot holes, Sam Witwicky turned into a jerk for some reason, and I still don't like most of the Transformers designs, but despite all that, it was entertaining and certainly action packed.

Posted an image gallery of our Alaskan cruise.

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Widened the content area by about 35 pixels. It may not sound like much, but I think it helps make it look a little nicer on higher resolution monitors, and all the content still fits within the most commonly used screen width of 1024 pixels. If you've noticed the lack of updates these past few weeks, that's because I was on vacation!

It's been about a week and a half since we got back from our Alaskan cruise, and I'm only just starting to feel like things are getting back to normal. It was a great trip that my wife and I took along with my parents, my aunt and uncle, my grandparents, and two friends of theirs. The boat ride lasted for ten days, and we stopped off at three Alaskan ports and one Canadian, though we were only in Victoria for about 4 hours, getting in at six in the morning, so we really didn't have much time to do anything there but get out and take a few pictures. In Ketchikan I did a walking tour of the town, in Juneau I saw a glacier and tried some Salmon jerky, and in Skagway I did some sightseeing from a 5-person ATV Kawasaki Mule, so yeah, it was a good trip. I'll try to get some pictures up soon, then write about it shortly after that.

When we were in Vallejo, before leaving for the cruise, we went to see the new Star Trek movie with my parents, and it was just as good the second time around. Then after the cruise was over but before we returned to Redding, Treese and I went to see Terminator: Salvation, which we both really liked. Unfortunately, they didn't turn off the lights in the theater! They were dimmer than normal, but it was still easy to see all around the room, so we weren't able to become immersed into the film. I wanted to get up and go alert someone, but there was never a point in the film where I felt I could leave for a minute without missing something cool. Then last Sunday we went to see Land of the Lost, which was funny, but definitely not worth seeing the theater. It felt like it was hacked together, as if there were a whole bunch of deleted scenes that we didn't get to see. I'll be interested to see how many they actually have on the DVD when it comes out.

When to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince today with the wife and her friends. It was enjoyable enough, though the end was rather anti-climatic, at least it was for the two of us. I was expecting more action than it had, and it just seemed like a long story for very little purpose.

Went to see the midnight showing of Brüno... and like Sacha Baron Cohen's previous film, Borat, there was definitely some shock value, uncomfortable situations, and many laugh-out-loud moments, but I don't think it matched the consistency of Borat... or maybe it was just because I had already seen Borat and knew some of what to expect. That might be the case, as I didn't find Borat quite as funny the second time around.

Got a call today from a lady named Yolanda about my request for trial by written declaration in regards to the traffic citation I was issued. After looking over my paperwork, she said it was obvious that I was not the one driving the vehicle. Then she tried several times to get me to call the police department and tell them who was driving the vehicle, telling me that I had to tell them or else I would have to pay the fine and my license would be suspended and all these other threats. It's just plain despicable that they're allowed to do that. And not just allowed, I'm sure they're instructed to do that. So I had to pay the bail amount, $415, and now have to wait 4-6 weeks after a possible 90 day wait for a judge to find in my favor before I get my money back... even though it is quite obvious that I have done nothing wrong. No wonder people hate the government.

The rest of our weekend was mostly spent watching season one of Jeremiah through Netflix streaming. This weekend we plan on watching the second season.

My wife and I went to see the midnight showing of District 9 on Thursday night along with a couple of her friends. When it was over, people actually applauded, and everyone in the theater seemed to really love the film. That made me feel like a bit of an outcast, as I didn't find it all that special. The first third of the film was mostly done in documentary-style format, which I found to be quite boring. It started getting more interesting towards the middle, though even then there was no clear goal established, so I kept thinking what is the point of this? The end really kicked up the action, and that was cool, especially with the alien weapons, but there was a couple plot points there that didn't make much sense to me. And then it ended, and I was like okay... is this really the end or... yep, the credits are rolling so I suppose it is.

After missing the midnight showing of G.I. Joe, we finally got around to seeing it this morning. I went in expecting it to be absolutely terrible, and while it was completely ridiculous, I was still entertained. I think also what helped me enjoy it was the fact that I just recently watched the new G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1 DVD box set, as that revealed how silly and absurd the classic cartoon was. So while you'll never see me going on record saying it was a great movie, I definitely enjoyed my experience and it truly felt like G.I. Joe.

After the movie we went over to a friends house, as they were having troubles with their computer. It took most of the day, but I finally got the trojans and malware removed. Doesn't sound like fun, but we both actually a nice time being out of our house, hanging out with friends. Plus, we had a delicious dinner of cheeseburgers made with real beef (we usually use ground turkey), followed by some homemade chocolate cake.

Earlier in the week I received a letter in the mail regarding the trial by written declaration I filed about the red light camera traffic ticket I received. The letter said that I was found not guilty due to "reasonable doubt as to identity". I was confident I would be found not guilty, but I'm glad to have it officially behind me. And I'll also be glad to get my $415 back.

Posted the character profiles of Gure (from Dragon Ball Z), Tarble (from Dragon Ball Z).

Wow, I haven't posted anything about what's going on with me in forever. I think the last time was in August, so I've got a lot of catching up to do. Okay, so the first thing is that my wife set a date to get her hip replaced. It will be happening December 21st, and yes, this is the same hip she got replaced last time. It's causing her a lot of pain and making horrible squeaking, crunching, and grinding noises, so there's definitely something wrong that needs to be fixed, and we feel that it just can't wait any longer.

Changing subjects, on Sunday we went over to have dinner at my wife's friend's place, as as typical when we were there I looked at the computer as she had been having problems with it. Normally I can just run a whole suite of cleaning utilities and do make some manual tweaks to get things working again, but not this time. Her laptop was severely infected with viruses that just would not go away no matter how many times the anti-virus and anti-rootkit programs were run. Hijacked browsers and missing Windows options were just a few of the problems they caused, so the only hope here was to back up all her data and do a complete re-install. We couldn't do it at the time, though, since she had nowhere to back up her data, so I didn't get to finish that up until yesterday.

On November 1st, we went to Turtle Bay to see the Lego exhibit. Now, I was expecting to see a whole bunch of really cool Lego setups like you see in those Lego stores with them all over the room, high and low... but that's not how it was at all. It was more like a museum with each Lego sculpture sitting isolated on a pedestal of some sort. The biggest one was a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, with the next biggest being a giant spider on the wall. Then there were also some pictures on the wall made out of Legos, and busts of people. The sculptures were cool, but lacked the excitement and wonder I was expecting. It's like you go up to one, look at it a little, and then move on to the next. Not like the Lego store where there was a whole town with a Godzilla monster attacking and so much going on that you could just keep looking and looking and seeing new things every time.

I had an interview on October 28th with a local company about doing some PHP and MySQL work, which by now I am quite familiar with. The interview was originally set up for earlier in the month, but he had to cancel and reschedule several times. He explain a little about the job, which was just fixing up their existing code to add new features and such, all stuff I could do fairly easily. Thing is, he said he had a long list of fixes in changes that he wanted but had a real hard time thinking up any of them. So while I think it would have been nice to have a steady paycheck (currently I do contract work so my paychecks come at all different times in all different amounts) while my wife goes through her surgery and recovery, I'm kind of thinking it was probably a good thing that I never heard back from him.

Okay, on to movies. We saw Zombieland in the theater, though we missed the midnight showing and ended up catching it on Sunday, October 25th. Oh, speaking of movies, for a couple of years now I've been really wanting to put all of our DVDs on a computer and use that as a media server to watch them, kinda like how we watch recorded shows on TiVo. So last month I finally took the plunge and bought one of these devices called a Network Media Tank. At first I bought the WD TV Live, but then even before it arrived I decided to switch to the eGreat eg-m34a, as its remote was way more extensive than the simplified WD TV Live's remote. Luckily, I was able to turn around and sell the WD TV Live on eBay for a small profit.

Setting up eGreat EG-M34A was a snap, for the most part. After plugging it up and waiting for it to boot, I went into the setup, had it download and install updated firmware, and created a network share to a folder that was already being shared on my PC. From that folder I could browse to a couple DVD folders and hit play, and the thing went to work bringing up the DVD menu. I started the movie and it played, over my home network, without a hiccup. Of course it's on a wired network, but still. Next, I hooked up a 1.5TB internal hard drive directly to SATA port on the side so the NMT (Networked Media Tank) could format the drive how it liked, then moved the drive into my PC where I could rip my DVDs directly to the drive rather than trying to copy them across the network. Since the NMT uses Linux and formatted the drive as ext3, I had to get Ext2Fsd so Windows could read it.

After that, it was all about learning the nuances of the device. One such annoyance I discovered was that I had to share every folder that I wanted to create a network share for, even if a parent folder is already being shared. It's kind of annoying because it means more folders popping up in My Network Places for no good reason. Another annoyance was that it takes like 40 seconds to boot up, and while standby mode is super quick, for some reason it still sends out some kind of signal through the HDMI cable when in standby because it doesn't cause our automatic HDMI switch to flick over to the next active HDMI connection. There's other little things as well, such as you can't re-order your network shares, and it's not alphabetical, it's the order in which you added them.

Anyway, the NMT is working great, so I figure it's time to sell my 300 disc DVD changers. I listed one on Craigslist starting at $450 (want to have room to negotiate down) and after a few days with no hits I also listed it on Amazon.com. Then I finally got a nibble on Craigslist, and last Wednesday the guy came over to check them out. I had one unhooked sitting out so he could look it all over and had the other one still hooked up in order to demonstrate how it works. He asked some typical questions which I easily answered as I operated the machine, and then the most surprising question escaped from his lips "would you take $80 for both of them?"... my jaw literally dropped as I was completely caught off guard. He thought I was selling them for $45 dollars each, not $450... and then a little later on I realized that even $45 per unit wasn't quite good enough for this guy as he was trying to get me down to $40 each. Just, wow.

What else... on Monday October 12th my parents and grandparents visited. I had spent the previous couple weeks selling a ton of stuff on Craigslist and just generally getting the placed cleaned up nice. Even bought a new mop, one of those micro-fiber ones, which seems to work pretty good. Definitely better than my old sponge mop. On Monday morning someone stopped by to get a couple computers and box of computer junk I had up for sale on Craislist, and we also got new bark put in the front yard. Anyway, when they arrived we chatted, had lunch, played a little Rock Band, then went out to dinner at Logan's followed by breakfast at Denny's the next morning, after which they all headed home. It was a nice visit.

Busy busy busy!! So much has been going on these past few weeks, I don't even know where to begin. Okay, first off, GaijinWorks helped launch Sunsoft's new U.S. website, SunsoftGames.com, on December 3rd. We originally wanted to launch on November 22nd but were just too busy with other things, so pushing it back a week and a half gave us time to play with and tweak the design and then edit the forum templates so they would match stylistically. I think it still needs a few small tweaks here and there but overall I think it looks pretty good.

A couple weeks ago a Spider decided to take up residence between the legs of my Perfect Grade W-Gundam Zero Custom toy that sits about a foot to the left of my computer monitor. After looking at some photos of California spiders on the web, I believe it to be a grass spider, though without a magnifying glass it's really hard to tell for sure. It was kind of unnerving at first, having a spider sitting between the legs of my toy constantly staring at me as I worked, but as time went on I got used to the little guy (or gal). It started out creating a very thin triangular-shaped web spreading out from the Gundam's legs to a bottle of hand lotion on one side and to the pen holder on the other side. The web gradually got thicker over time, and then Spidey started actually sitting on top of it, almost looking like he was a magic spider floating in mid air.

One day an ant wandered nearby and Spidey lashed out in attack, which was pretty cool to see first hand. I can still see where he is storing the carcass back in his web which now spans out behind the Gundam figure next to a CD-R spindle. A few days ago it looked like Spidey had decided to move as I found him about 15 inches away holding up inside a clear plastic bag containing a modem data cable. I had thought the bag was sealed, so I was extremely curious as to how he got in there, but didn't want to pick up the bag and disturb the little guy in order to figure it out. Well, yesterday I found him back in his web, so I checked out the bag and saw that it has a small hole punched in it, like from a hole punch or something, so that had to have been his point of entrance. At any rate, it's kinda cool having a pet that I don't have to actually take care of.

Alright, what else has been going on? The Wednesday before last I put new insulation around the pipes outside the house. It had been getting really cold at night and when I went to brush my teeth before bed I turned on the water nothing came out. Thus, the following day I went to Lowe's, picked up some insulation for pipes, and insulated the hell out of the pipe that comes out of the ground and into the house. I also put some around the pipes with the lawn sprinkler valves. Even so, later that night the same thing happened, no water, so I don't know what the heck was going on there. But it hasn't happened since and there's no signs of bursting so I guess we're good.

Zhu Zhu Pets... have you heard of these things? They're hamster toys that roll around and make silly sounds, and parents are going crazy over them. They retail for $10, but people were paying $40-50 for them at places like eBay and Amazon from personal sellers. Not surprisingly, eToys (a fairly crappy online toy store) found a way to cash in on this by packaging four hamsters (one of each of the original colors) with a playset and a pack of 8 AAA batteries and charging $89.98 for it. The Fun House list price is $30 (even though it seems to sell closer to $20 at most retail stores) while each hamster's list price is $10, which makes that one pack of 8 AAA batteries cost about $20 in the best-case scenario. Total ripoff.

That being said, I too was able to cash in a bit on this silly Zhu Zhu craze. Some people call it making easy money, but there's really nothing easy about it. Packing, shipping, record keeping, customer service... it's tiring, it's a hassle, and it's just an overall big pain in the rear. It is definitely not preferred method of earning dough and am really glad these toy crazes only come once a year. While doing this, I made it a point to put everything on credit card in order to rack up points that I could then use to get some free crap after it was all over. I've had my eye on that AC/DC Rockband Track Pack for a while now....

Unfortunately, I discovered too late that the credit card I was using was not earning me points, but something called "Extra Cash From Citi". And while that may sound like I'd be getting cash back or something similar, instead it's nothing but a super-lame discount program. They have a bunch of crap on their website, most of which I wouldn't take for free, and this Extra Cash is used to give discounts on their garbage. They have no console videogames, no worthwhile toys, and only a small handful of electronics. No XBox 360 games? No external hard drives? No printers? And even when I saw stuff that I might have been interested in, such as a DVD or a USB extension cord, their discount was completely pointless because I could find the exact same thing at Amazon for way cheaper. The fine print on their site say "Extra Cash from Citi has no cash value". Yeah, ain't that the truth. But I'd take it further and say it has no value whatsoever.

Let's move on to something more pleasant, shall we? Last night I went to see the midnight showing of Avatar in 3D. The 3D was really cool, and the movie was quite good as well, but unfortunately the experience wasn't that fantastic. I don't know what it is with that theater, but the last few times we went to see midnight showings there they end up cutting off the air conditioner so it gets very hot and stuffy and hard to breath. I just submitted a complaint but who knows if that will do any good at all for the next midnight showing. We usually like to do these at the Anderson theater, but this time the movie was in 3D and only Movies 10 is set up for that.

Okay, I guess that's enough for now. Time to go eat dinner.

Wow, December all ready? Didn't I just take down the Christmas tree last month? Thanksgiving was nice. We drove down to visit my parents Wednesday afternoon and stayed until Saturday. Treese bought this new card game called Scrabble Slam because my mom and grandmother both love Scrabble. And it turned out to be a fun game as well. We usually go over to my aunt's for Thanksgiving dinner, but this time they were visiting other family so we all had dinner at my grandparents. Oh, and that morning I also went to visit my other grandfather who is recovering from surgery.

The day after Thanksgiving we went with my parents to see the 2012. It was pretty much what I was expecting it to be, a special effects bonanza with little substance and lots of nearly impossible extremely narrow escapes from death. But at least it was entertaining. Afterwards we had lunch at Princess Garden, then went home and messed around with the computers and played board games. The next day we ate at IHOP, then went back to the house and visited a little while longer as my aunt stopped by. During the conversation she mentioned that my cousin bought a new flatscreen TV and so his old 32" TV was now just sitting in the garage to be given away. Just so happens that we were looking for a bigger TV for our bedroom, so we stopped by and picked it up on our way home.
